Need help: Value of 1927 Philadelphia Athletics signed baseball

A friend of mine has a baseball signed by members of the 1927 Philadelphia Athletics baseball team.

The ball appears to be an official league ball in good shape. Although legible with some effort, the signatures for the most part are very faded.

The ball comes down through the family of Max Bishop who was an Athletics player.

The signatures that I can read are:

Sammy Hale
Rube Walberg
Connie Mack ( manager )
*Ty Cobb
*Judy Johnson
Max Bishop
Joe Boley
Howard Ehmke
Jack Quinn
Jimmy Dykes
*Al Simmons
Cy Perkins
Bill "Baby Doll" Jacobson

An * has been placed in front of HOF players.

My friend would like to know an approximate market value of this item to evaluate whether he should sell at this time.

I have suggested a public auction such as Mastronet.

If board members can give an approximate value for this item it would be greatlly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ricardo

  • Just like your other question states, it is almost impossible to give a quote without seeing a picture of the item. Balls that rate in the 1-2 strength range, rarely if ever make it to Mastro's auctions. Its like calling a car dealer over the phone and asking them to quote you a price of what they would give you for a trade-in without even looking at your car.....
  • Yeah post some scans so we can take a look. Scgaynor on ebay does a nice job getting high value for his consignments.

I think who you have as Judy Johnson is actually Jing Johnson. Judy's a Negro League HOF'er, so it would be pretty odd if he was on that ball. It sounds like a great ball nonetheless!

The condition of the ball will obviously affect the value - a ball is in good shape - the price will vary from auction to auction. If badly faded, it won't bring as much as catalog value IMO.

Ball park value? 2500-3500$ approx. Nm. Source: Standard Cat of Memorabilia 3rd Ed.

That's a great item for the Philly A's club people around the country.

I would like to see a scan - you can put the ball directly on your scanner - if you have a ball cube, just place it in there and scan away.

    Tell your friend, good luck.
