1653 Saxony Taler - Johann Georg I (Dav-7612) -- Choice Mint State -- Photos

As promised, here's an update to my previous World Crowns & Thalers thread regarding the progress that I have made... So far, I have catalogued and photographed my foreign coin collection, and am preparing the "Top 24" for the first submittal to PCGS.

Here's the first coin photo post. This 1653 Saxony Taler - Johann Georg I (Dav-7612) appears to be in Choice Mint State condition to me, and looks much prettier in hand than in this rather dull and lifeless photo. We'll see what PCGS has to say.

I'd appreciate any of your comments about the coin, since I am not a learned "Dark Sider" image

Second set of images does not show up for me. When I right-click on one and select "View Image" (am using Mozilla FireFox), I get an error message saying "phvrf.yahoo.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again."

I agree with the previous 2 posts - beautiful coin with tremendous details! I would make a coin like that feel quite welcome in my collection. I would think that PCGS or NGS would look favorably on the coin.

All of the talers in my collection are in the EF to AU range, so I do not have much experience with mint state coins of this period. My first impression was that is is too bright for a coin of this age, but keep in mind that a perfect original mint state taler could hit me in the forehead and I would not know the difference.

WorldCoinGuy: Thanks for your post. Although I am not a World Coin specialist, based on my collecting experience with other Large Silver Coins (Morgan Dollars), Bust Halves, etc. this beautiful Saxony Taler appears to me to be a choice mint state example, and at the very minimum at least an AU-58.

I just sent this in to PCGS today as part of a 33 piece World Economy Level Coin coin grading submission, so we'll see in due time how they evaluate it.

I will be posting other photos taken of the raw coins, prior to submission, inviting others on the World Coin Forum to post their comments.

Super coin Stuart! The obverse certainly appears to be MS, so I would guess the that the flat areas on the reverse are just due to a weak strike (common for coins of this era).

I am curious to know how soon they will get that package back to you Stuart.

What was the cost for 33 coins if you don't mind me asking?
I have a few coins I would like to submit, but have balked at the whole process and cost factor. That and the slabbization (new word there folks!) process is not one I am too enamored with.

    Thanks,

    Nick

Nick: As a Collectors Club member, I was able to submit the coins via "Economy Service Level" grading for $18 per coin plus return S/H/I, which averages out to about a total of $20 per coin for this shipment.

This is a slow, but least expensive method for submissions.
