Ebay Feedback

I won and paid for an item on Sept.25th. The first communication with the selller went as expected and they claimed to have shipped the item about 4 days later. After about 10 days I have yet to receive the item so I email the seller and get no response, I emailed 3 more times before they come back and say they had a tragedy in the family and would I please bear with them. I give it a week and I email the seller twice more w/o response. I then file a claim with Paypal after 22 days, I immediately get a reply from the seller stating that they have sent another item out and they provide a tracking number. Item received 26 days after auctions end. The item was $200 and as described but should I leave no feedback, neutral feedback or negitave feedback?

  • here's the problem...if the seller already hasn't left a feedback for you...he can retaliate with anything you do to him.
If they have already left you feedback..then fire at will...he deserves it!

Now, there are those people who are still stuck in areas that the hurricanes ripped through. I know I mailed a package to LA on the 5th..and the lady just got it this past Thursday. It was in a holding warehouse waiting to be delivered. I had tracked it...so she knew the progress..but none the less...the timing was horrible.

If he was just lax and didn't take care of business..he atleast derserves a neutral...

That's what the feedback sustem is supposed to be for...to warn potential buyers from problem sellers. I know I, as well as most dealers usually mail the same day or next day of payment.

Good luck...atleast you have the goods!!

This has happened to me as well. My take on a seller who offers every heart-tugging excuse why the item is delayed, only to send it immediately after paypal pulls their money is that their excuse was ingenuous. Tragedy happens all the time, and while it is unfortunate, it is not an excuse to hang people up. If you can send an email, if you can get up and walk, you can send a package someone has already paid for.

That being said, I understand your frustration. Don't leave negative feedback. That just pours gasoline on the fire. I'd block the seller and never bid on his auctions again.

Sometimes you just gotta move on.

Edited to demonstrate that I'm not a completely unfeeling bastid.

  • I would leave no feedback. 26 days isn't the end of the world, and you hate to beat a guy when he might be down. In the end you got what you wanted.
  • well if you leave him positive feedback, odds are you will get positive feedback back.

Personally, I now play chicken with feedback with items I sell. I put a note with the items I send stating quid pro quo on positive feedback. At least that way, they know that I will leave it for them, once I get it. However, I did have one guy email me four times in one day about his feedback. I just told him that once I get feedback, feedback is automatically left for him. So he left me feedback and then I did the same for him.

The new norm seems to be for buyers to leave positive feedback first.

  • A good seller should alway leave feedback as soon as he is paid .

I Agree with Skinsfan. Sellers should leave feedback when payment is received. I always pay for my auction wins the same day I win them. That should be enough to receive positive feedback as a buyer. There is NO REASON to ever receive a negative in this situation. Sellers should not be able to hold the buyers feedback hostage... just provide good service and its not a problem.

This topic always seems to get me going....

  • The problem sometimes with a leaving postive feedback first as a seller is that there is a lot more at risk if the product doesn't arrive properly such as damaged, lost in transit, etc. The buyer may quickly leave a negative without giving a chance to remedy a situation. Sellers rely on there feedback as a lifesource. Buyers probably do not.

I know this topic has been beat to death lately. I agree that sellers should leave feedback first, although I can understand why some do not. In this situation, a neutral would be in order explaining that it took 26 days to arrive and to mention the "family tragedy", that way a slow shipment 2 months from now cannot be explained away.

I have been on both sides of this coin. I have been a buyer who paid immediately, which when Paypal is offered I always do, and have had to wait nearly a month after payment for my item.

I also have been on the flipside, where I have been paid and the buyer doesn't get the item for nearly a month. It doesn't happen often, but once in a while it does. When I sell a put the auctions on to end on one night. I usually ship out the first batch not the next day, but the following day. So within 36 hours of auctions end. You pay me fast I get it out fast which is what I expect when I win and pay fast. However, I have had smoe situations where I have gotten smoe M/O's and I have cashed them and on my stupidity I mismarked the guy who sent payment. After a week or so, where I still think I haven't recieved paqyment I get an e-mail from smoeone who says they haven't recieved the card. I ALWAYS say, it may have been my mistake so please contact the issuer to see if the check has been cashed, and if it has not, my records are correct and I have yet to recieve it. I have only had 2 instatncesin over 1000 sales where it was my mistake, but it does happen. I apologized, sent out the card and waited for feedback. I would not have left him negative if he left me a neg, but I wanted him to really think if I deserved one. I made an honest mistake and since I had yet to leave feedback I still had smoe leverage only so far as that he got to rethink before bamming me with a neg.

On Paypal, I leave feedback usually within a week. I just wait for what I think is the bulk of the payments and I leave them all at once. I always leave those before they get the item because they did their part.

I also have been burned by a vindictive seller. I won 2 lots of 4 @ $4ea of 1967 fb cards and I didn;t get feed back after I paid right after auctions end. I got the cards which were described as NM+ and they were EX at best. I left the guy ++ on both and stated Fast shipping, cards were overgraded. He then hit me with 2 negs. What a fcuker. I would never do that, but I think that when a buyer hasn't gotten feedback they will really think through wether or not to leave a neg.

I don't know whats right or wrong, but this is just my expiriences and $.02.

May the Lord take a liking to em' and blow em' up real good!!
  • I always pay within 24-hours; usually within a few hours.
THAT is me doing "my part of the deal." The best sellers will
leave positive fb ASAP, based on my payment. I deserve it
    and I expect it.

Most sellers will have a VERY long wait if they expect me to leave
fb first. The exception is when the item was bought cheap and the
service was fast. Also, if I know/like a seller, I will leave fb first.

When someone pays me, they get positive fb immediately. They
have done their part. It then becomes "my part of the deal" to
deliver the item as advertised and as quickly as the semi-competent
    USPS will handle it.

I do not leave negative fb for junky sellers, or psycho-deadbeat
bidders. I punish the bad sellers by NEVER AGAIN spending bucks
at their auctions. (I also tell my friends and customers to avoid evil
sellers.) I punish screwball bidders by blocking them and
telling fleabay to refund me a few pennies.

Personal tragedies are just that - very personal. I've carried packages for days, planning on getting to the post office; I've even forgotten to mail things until I am reminded by the buyer or seller. Nobody wants excuses. The important thing is to take responsibility. The fact that, in the above scenerio, the seller finally sent the item after being prodded where it hurts doesn't leave me with a good feeling about him. There's a good chance that even if you leave positive feedback, stating how long the shipping took and why, that you would get a retaliatory neg. I wouldn't trust this guy to do the right thing.

I would give the seller the benefit of the doubt. I am at present having both a family crisis and a big job challenge. I was a super fast payer and still am sending off payments in a timely manner for the most part, but the importance of immediate payment has taken a bit of a back seat. I think people get a little too hung up on some of this stuff......it's a hobby. Family, health and our jobs should come first.

Joe - I'm sorry for your current difficulties. Hope things work out. You're probably the perfect person to teach us something here, if you have a moment:

Let's say one of the sellers you've run late on sends you an email asking you if you've sent payment yet. Would you
    A. Ignore his first 3 emails, and then on the 4th one tell him of your difficulties and ask him to bear with you?
    B. Tell him of your difficulties and tell him the check will be in the mail?
    C. Not tell him of your difficulties, but simply apologize and tell him the check is in the mail?
    D. Ignore all of his emails?

I would say C, and from a sellers perspective this is also what I would say. I think that noone needs to hear about personal problems and a simple "sorry for the delay it was an oversight on my part," would do better to a compassionate buyer/seller than a long sob story.

And please don't think, Joe, that I am calling what you are going through is a sob story. But when you try to tell a stranger about your life that can be how it comes across.

    and Joe...

you are so right and too many times people lose site of that and get caught up in the hobby. I do not condone persistant tardiness, but I understand that it does happen at times. If I were to buy from a seller and have it happen twice, I would not be so understanding and I would expect the same reaction of someone buying from me if I faltered twice.
