    70. I just found one in my grandfather's attic.
  • hey bob(sbbcards)-
can remember a dealer back in the late 80's who displayed three different & did so at several shows!
of course their authenticity was often questioned,
and he turned up dead in a las vegas motel room shrouded by suspicious circumstances...
    anybody know this story?

  • I believe there are between 50 and 75 as someone else said. But i will add that rumer has it that there are a # in privete collections not graded and not for sale. The big ? is though what about the psa 8 ? Some of the most versed in this hobby insist that it is trimmed because they new it in it's Raw life. Does anyone have info about this ? I have alway's thought this would be an interesting topic for discussion if anyone has real first hand info.

  • well bowman fan-
it's true! the mcnall-gretzky wagner was originally an oversized EX card!
all of a sudden, it's appears as a PSA 8!
there is no doubt in my mind that the card has been (however professionally) trimmed!
    dabighurt... where are you?
  • There are approximately 50 to 60 examples known to exist and only 3 with Piedmont backing.
You can check here: The T206 Museum
  • Keep talking about the famous "8" being allegedly trimmed and POOF! This thread will be history. I breached this subject on the 54 forum and it was a hot topic that dissappeared very quickly. I know nothing of that card first hand but wonder that if it was trimmed why didn't they go ahead and do it right so it would be a 9 or 10. The darn thing is centered. Maybe the 8 is just to throw off the trim job. I really do not have an opinion either way though. I really doubt I will ever have to take the question seriously, as I don't forsee ever being able to buy it!

Never understood people bashing this card. Doesn't look trimmed to me. I've seen pictures of other high grade T-206's that look similar to this.

Who cares if the 8 is trimmed or not? What I'd like to know is how the darn thing remained in such nice condition all those years before anyone thought to preserve it for value's sake. What's the history of this particular card? Where was it on April 27, 1917, for example? What about January 20, 1927? How about November 12, 1952? It had to be somewhere that was secure throughout it's entire life. What a neat story this card holds!
  • id say around 75 copies. The second thing is that even if the Gretzky/ Mcnall card is trimmed there is not a grading company out there that would not holder this card, which when sold to Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall was raw and graded in the catalog as Mint.image

jrinck's comments reminded me of one of coin collectings biggest prizes, the 1933 Double Eagle that was auctioned by Sotheby's for $7,590,020. There is a great book, Illegal Tender, that describes the history of the few coins that left the mint.

"....Except for two placed on display at the Smithsonian, all Double Eagles were remelted into gold bars-supposedly. But in 1944, agents for Egypt's King Farouk applied for-and, astonishingly, obtained-an export license for a '33 Double Eagle, destined for the king's prodigious coin collection. Hearing that Farouk paid more than $1,500 for his, coin dealers scattered across the US began running ads soliciting Double Eagles......"

It would be awesome if such a history could be made for this T206 Wagner.

The Wagner's been a noted item almost since it came out. Collector's Sportslook, the late, lamented card magazine, printed a copy of a newspaper article from the 1940s stating that a copy sold for $25, making it the most valuable single card known. I'm sure that a good book could be written on this hobby, and the Wagner could be a good focus for it.
