<< <i>Guess it'd have to be the 1948 Bowman George Mikan. I'm pretty sure I've seen a PSA 9 in an auction but don't know what it brought. >>
Basketball cards seem to be somewhat dead. I guess maanily because there are so many years without sets.
If you just go for price, you are looking at a PSA 10 1948 Bowman Mikan that would price out at roughly $100,000.
If you are looking for card rarity then the 1948 Bowman Mikan would not be it, it would be a different Mikan. Remember, the Wagner card is not impossible at all, over 100 exist, but it is rare in the fact that thousands of 1952 Mantles exist. The Wagner, however, does have magic to it as a card -- not as a grade. When a new one is "found" -- in any condition -- its almost like a religious event took place.
That being said, I think the honus wagner of Basketball cards is Mikan's 1950 Scott's card. There is a picture of it (i think) on my site www.sportscards.info. This card is incredibly rare ... I'm only comfortable in saying that 15 may be in collectors hands at most (since I've been collecting I have only known of the existence of 4/5). I know the last one sold for about $15,000. Most of these are not in good shape (maybe a PSA 5/6) which, in my book, makes it the most expensive basketball card in every grade that its available in (even what would be a PSA 4 stained sold for $8,000 a few years back). Also, the cards were redeamable for lakers tickets and that is why very few exist.
My second choice would be the 1950 Bread for Energy Mikan (sells for roughly $10,000 although most collectors that have one say they think they are $25,000 cards and wouldn't sell unless they had those types of offers) and the 1950 Royal Dessert Mikan (typically sells for around $6,000 if you can find one). Like the Scott's, these prices are for cards that would be PSA 5s ... and only about 15 exist for each one.

As for Don, thanks for the comment. I actually have been meaning to update my site -- but I've been working on just too many things at the moment. I basically have pictures of everything now, but the hope is that one day I'll sit down and pop out the book I always wanted to write (but I've been saying that for the last four years so who knows). If you want to see anything in particular, just let me know and I'll scrounge around and see if I can post it. I even got a scan of an entire Scott's set in the beginning of the year (although I had to pay $100 for the pictures). The Scott's have the coolest backs out of all basketball cards -- the most interesting stories about players I've ever read. I'll try and post some when I get home.
Also, my plan is to still open a 1957 pack at the next National I can finally get too (I had to miss this year's because of a wedding).

<< <i>Speaking of, what is the honus Wagner of hockey? Its that 1910 Canadian goalie ... right?

Most dealers that sell hockey show Vezina's rc, but it's probably not the rarest card by any means.
