What the Honus Wagner of football cards?

<< <i>Yeah they did ask $250,000, and it ended up selling on eBay for around $80,000. That specific card is analagous to the PSA 8 Wagner, but unlike Wagner the Nagurski is not the most valuable card across all grades. That honor would fall to the 1894 Mayo Anonymous (John Dunlap) link. Still, the Nagurski is the most famous and desirable of vintage football cards, and is sometimes called the Honus Wagner of football cards.

From what you say Allen, it sounds like Bronco is more like the 52 Topps mantle, and that other one is more like the Wagner.
<< <i>There's really no perfect analogy, because Dunlap, although a strong player from what I read, would basically be unremarkable otherwise. Wagner on the other hand, it a top-tier HOFer, and T206 is an extremely popular set. That card has everything going for it. The Anonymous is simply a rarity. The Nagurski, although in the tough to find high numbers, is not nearly as rare as the Wagner. But, he is also a top-tier HOFer, and the Chicles are a very popular set. Your could buy 100 low-grade Nagurskis for the price of 1 low-grade Wagner. You're right, the Nagurski does seem more similar to the 52 Mantle than the Wagner. I'd be thrilled to own any of the 4 cards mentioned in this thread >>
I see the mantle 1952 as the most popular card you have a chance to afford (albeit in a PSA 1, or even altered) the wagner, most people cannot afford, especially since that PSA1 went for $93,000. I'm sure a PSA 1 Bronco, would probably be somewhat affordable, even for the low income collectors. Honus wagner's card adds to it's value of him being a hall of famer, and that's probably one of the reasons it shoots through the roof. I'm sure it still would have been worth something even if his career batting average barely passed the mendoza line. probably no where near as much, but still expensive. What is it now, 30 examples exists, and 2 of the Gretzky version?
The other (and main) thing the Wagner has going for it is the tremendous media following it's had, especially since Gretzky and McNall bought it in 1991. When McNall went to the klinker, it was given away in a Wal-Mart promotion adding more media hype. Finally, Brian Seigel bought it for $1.265 million, the most ever paid for a card. No other card, aside for the brief 15 minutes of the Billy ripken error, has ever received the fame of the Wagner card. Some cards are definitely more rare but none as well known. Alas, there really is no equivalent card in basketball, football, and hockey. Is there a "most expensive card/most desirable card" in each of these sports? Of course. Is there a Wagner? No way.
<< <i>I think there's only one Gretzky version.

the best way to sum up the wagner is that I know many people who aren't into collecting at all, but they know of the Wagner.

It sounds like you've been kicked since you're a new user talking about these boards. I'm not this person you seem to think I am, but I will find out who you are. If anyone sounds like a psycho, it would be you. No one said anything to you and you came out of nowhere.
