Simple question on O-PEE-CHEE's

This will be a silly question, but are these cards the same as Topps issued cards but made in Canada?

Thanks,

Jeff

I just picked up this card, that's why I was wondering.

Are they any more difficult to come across?

Generally yes, they are identical to the corresponding Topps version except for the copyright line and partial French text. There were however, instances where OPC used a different photo for the player, or cropped the same photo differently, and OPC also put more Expos and Blue Jays players in the sets, than did Topps.

Also yes, the OPC's were made and distributed in Canada, so they are more difficult to obtain here in the US.

One other thing is since OPC was printed later than Topps, OPC got more trades and free agent signings reflected on their cards than Topps did. Normally, OPC would just superimpose a couple lines of type into the picture saying what team the player was traded to or signed with, and when the trade/signing occured.

    Here are a couple examples...

Other times, OPC would actually show the player with the new team...

The 1968 OPC Colavito card you got is identical to the Topps cards except the back is a slightly different shade, and it says printed in Canada on it. It's one of the easier 1960's OPC cards to find for some reason.

I need the following OPC to complete all the Brooks Robinson canadian issues-1965 #1 and #5 and his regular 65 opc card. I also need 1967 #1 "the champs",and two cards from 1975-1975 MVP card and 1975 ALCS card. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way I think the 1971 OPC are the best of the OPC versions-I love the yellow back-it blows away the 71 topps issue. Scott quitcrab@optonline.net

The OPC card of Hendrick looks like a glamour shot. LOL.

Also production was only about 5% of what Topps put out each year---Something PSA still to this day doesn't get!!

Some years the OPC cards were printed on white cardstock instead of grey (I think). I seem to remember my 1983 Ripken OPC being on white stock, but I could be wrong.

I never understood why Topps used the grey stock. Their traded sets were always on white stock and looked so much better. Can someone explain that to me?

    What part don't they get?

    Probably just cheaper.

IMO they should be worth at least 2 to 3 times more than Topps as you can consider them all SP'S.

Just because they are rarer does not mean that they are more valuable. Yes - player collectors have driven up the price of star OPC cards from the 1970s - but sets and commons from these issues are very slow movers, and do not draw any significant level of interest.

They are only worth what the market dictates - and the market on OPC cards can be all over the place. Add one or two passionate player set collectors - and the card ends up for selling many times what it otherwise might.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

OPC's often have a rough edge as well.
Collecting all graded Alan Trammell graded cards as well as graded 1984 Topps, Donruss, and Fleer Detroit Tigers

Apologies for hi-jacking this thread, but I have a few hundred nice OPC cards from '78, '79, '82 & '83 if anybody is interested. Many stars and HOFers. I am quite willing to send them off for pre-inspection before anybody commits to a purchase, assuming you pay the postage for this. I can send a few scans out if need be. PM if interested.

They have a message board also, and the people on there are great! They trade with each other and help out with other sets, and there is no money involved... It's for the love of the hobby and ya gotta like that! There is a gentleman named Andrew on the board that helps out just about everyone who partakes in collecting OPCs...

I have to say it is both refreshing and just plain cool to work deal with these fellas...

    Always looking for 1967 OPC's.

I heard that Andrew is extremely good looking too. image
