I found 2 '72-P Type 1 Ikes at our local coin show today.

Being an Ike guy I have gotten used to walking away from tables and shows empty handed, not to mention taking the usual guff about Ikes in general as a collectible coin.

Some times that works for you though. Today as I was looking at a dealers case I saw a nice 72-P, flipped it over, got out my loop and low and behold a type 1. $2 I saw a a member of our coin club and was telling him about my find and he metioned he had just gotten an Ike in a cigar box he bought at an estate sale. He showed it to me, guess what... another 72-P Type 1! Not as nice but still MS. $1.25 So I got 2 Type 1 MS Ikes for $3.25. i'm pretty happy.

I know the Type 3 is the most common, then the Type 1 and then the rarest being the Type 2. Can anyone help me with population figures on the three different types? I must have lost all my pop reports and sheets on Ikes.

I think the Type 1 and Type 3 are available in similar quantities, however, the Type 3 is easier to find in GEM.

Well, that explains finding 2. So much for my great "find". Oh well, for $3.25 it was fun while it lasted.

Type 2: 400 (MS 66 highest -- pop 4; MS 65 pop 20)
Type 3: 1527 (MS 66 highest -- pop 12; MS 65 pop 246)

NCG population

Type 1: 162 (MS 65 highest -- pop 63; MS 64 pop 80)
Type 2: 65 (MS 65 highest -- pop 10; MS 64 pop 25)
Type 3: 202 (MS 66 highest -- pop 9; MS 65 pop 74)

You prompted me to look at my Ike's. I am having a hard time distinguishing type based on Redbook descriptions. Anyone know of a nice web reference that shows photos of the small world on each type? Or perhaps can post photos on this thread?

edit: Nevermind. I tried another search (on the forum) and found it: Ike Types '72

I did not mean to burst your bubble. If they are nice quality as you say they are, then for $3.25, you did okay.

xbob, that is the site i printed out and keep in my Ike notebook. It really came in handy today! That was supercoins site. He used to post here quite often a few years back and was quite informed on Ike varities. He also had a nice page on the 71-S Peg Leg but it's not accessible any longer for some reason. But his thread on it here is.

I will probably send them to PCGS when I get around to it. They aren't high MS, both have the "baggy" appearence Ikes are known for. One has a heart break gash on Ike's head, But even if, I hope to come out a little ahead after grading/slabbing on my $3.25.

MS 64's type I's are well worth getting graded.

They are worth around $40-50 per coin.

Heck, even in 63 they are worth the slab fee.

Way to go!

For quick reference, the type 1 Earth looks like this:



According to PCGS price guides this is a $60 coin in MS 64 (pop 283 -- the highest number of any grade), and a $600 coin in MS 65 (pop 102), and a $9,750 coin in MS 66 (pop 4).

My obvservations are this coin is worth about $400 in PCGS MS 65 and about $35 in PCGS MS 64.
