I am currently putting this nightmarish, yet beautiful, set together. I need lots of help though. Any info (tough cards, real prices(not SMR fantasy prices), etc. would be a great help. I also am buying anything 4 or better and 3s if their sharp. Please let me know. Thanks.
I didn't clarify the sport. I am talking about baseball. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks again.

The simple answer is that the tough cards are the short prints (49 cards). After that the variations (3, plus color variations), then the common series (49 cards). The set is complete at 101, but a lot of collectors (myself included) also collect the color variations that seem to only occur in the common series.
However, I've found that some of the sp's seem to come up a lot more often than others. The variations (there are 3 "real" variations, meaning they were consciously corrected, and an endless number of color variations) are not all the same either. IMO opinion Peterson Red Hat is by far the toughest, followed by Hermansk, Aberson short sleeve is fairly easy, I think there were a few on ebay last week alone. This card is often misidentified by PSA, so be sure to check the card regardless of how it is listed.
Prices are all over the board, but throw out SMR. Especially on the short prints it's not even close. Your best bet for a handle on pricing is completed ebay and catalog house auctions, and dealer sites. Levi has the best selection of Leafs. One of the top sets got broken up this past spring in Mastro so there are lots of realized prices.
There has been a lot of competition in this set over the last four years, especially on the higher end cards. If you see a short print and it's in your price range you'd be safe to grab it, some cards have only come up for sale 2-3 times in the last few years.
Sorry this is a bit rambly, if you would like to talk more about his set turn on your pm's and shoot me one, I've got a bunch of lower grade ones as well (3's-6's, common and sp's).

The prices for mid grade cards are still decent but they also gone up a bit recently.
Not too many cards from the 40's, it has to be the worst decade for baseball cards.
Its not the most atractive set ever...but it does have its charm.
here its a pic from Jay's website
