Dumb baseball question from a casual fan........

Why exactly does a swinging strike three pitch in the dirt not count as an out immediately?

It's just one of those rules. However if there is a runner on first with less than 2 outs it doesn't matter if he drops the ball. The guy is out. But with 2 outs any dropped 3rd is live.

    Hope that helped.

  • In order for an out to be registered the ball has to caught or a runner tagged. That is the reason ...not it's one of those rules!!!

And why does the ball have to be caught or the runner be tagged for an out to register?

    Because its the RULES!

  • Basically, you can have an infinite number of strikeouts in one inning. The record is 4 done by numerous pitchers. It registers as a strikeout for the hitter. The pitcher records a strikeout, but not an out.

I am not sure that his OB avg goes up. In most cases an E is given to the catcher and in at least that case OB does not. As for WP and PB I would think it does not too.

    Good for you.

What about bunting foul when you have two strikes on you?

Reaching on an error does not help your OB average. It therefore lowers it as it is a time at bat. In simple terms one does not get credit for reaching base via an error like one does for a walk or hit batsman.

    this I am positive of.

    SD Read this

    or.........On-base Percentage
(hits + walks + hits by pitch) / (at-bats + walks + hits by pitch + sacrifice flies)

Reaching on error is not figured in to OBP, so reaching on an error would lower your OBP. Remember the purpose of this stat is to measure how producitve a hitter is at getting himself on base. If you reached on an error you did not get yourself on base
    Good for you.
  • Funny, I just looked up the same site and was about to post the same thing.

However if the moon is void of course and Mars is in retrograde the umpire has the right to competely blow the call and screw up a good game.

Yes. And you are OUTTA HERE!!!!
  • Once you've become comfortable with dropped third strike rule, you're ready to start on the infield fly rule. Once you've mastered that, quantum mechanics is a breeze.
