How often have you been high bidder and the auction goes away?

I had a high bid on a PSA 10 1/1 1968 Topps Oakland A's Team card on eBay. Auction had not ended and my high bid was substantially more than the current bid! Suddenly I checked today and the auction does not exist? What is with that! Unfortunately I did not write down the auction number nor do I remember the seller ID. Needless to say I am not a happy camper! Any knowledge out there on what one can do under these circumstances?

mini are you saying that even in my ebay it does not show?

    Good for you.
  • That's exactly what I'm saying? If eBay took some sort of action on this seller would I not receive an e-mail advising of same?
  • that has occasionally happened to be as both a buyer and seller. Don't worry, the auction will magically "appear" in a day or two.
  • I'm assuming the auction has ended?
  • No that's the strange thing about it......the auction had not ended!

I'm guessing he got an offer that he couldn't refuse. I have a real distaste for this and won't do it on my auctions.

  • I had some good money on it......bid was at $152 last time I checked.........my bid was much higher! Pathetic Seller to do what he did without even giving me a shot at it?

  • 'coolnotes' just did the same thing on a v252 Joliat - took it off Sunday with several bids on it, relisted Monday with a higher opening bid and then dropped it off again Tuesday. very 'uncool'

Here's my sob story, I was bidding on a pin back button of my favorite player (Killebrew), that I had heard existed, but had never seen. This time I actually had enough funds in the bank to spend the ridiculous amount of money it was going to take to get it. I was jazzed, and put in a decent opening bid, knowing I would have to bid a lot more to get it. Poof! Seller got an "offer he couldn't refuse" and ended the auction.

I think it should be very hard, if not impossible, to end an auction early. There should be an agreement that if you list an item it is going to be AUCTIONED. The seller obviously wants his cake and eat it too. Mom always said "you can't do that".

I think in a "real" auction the seller cannot sell his item to anyone he wants, he has to let the bidding take it's course. I have sold a few things on eBay and wouldn't end an auction early.

In my case, this seller might have screwed himself as I was going to get very stupid in my pursuit of this button.

    Oh well.

  • what i can never figure out is why a seller would end an auction for an offer, logic would tell me that if one person was making a big offer that the item might still be worth more than his offer. everytime i have had an offer to buy before the auction ends i politely decline and tell them to bid that as their max and maybe they will get the item cheaper.......sometimes they do not even bid but the item always sells for more than the offer. sellers should realize most bids come in the last day if not in the last minutes).
