Question about 1959 Fleer and current submission special

So, which cards can I submit from my 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set under the currently monthly special as $6 commons? I've seen differing posts about what PSA has considered a common/non-common from that set in the past.

Thanks!

  • My understanding is none of them. Ted is in the HOF so he is not a common.

None IS the correct answer..............sorry to say...

  • I'd think you could send any of them in (except #68) as long as they don't have a value over $500.
Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Tom Seaver, Mike Schmidt, George Brett, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock player collector
  • Apparently there is much confusion about this...

I think I'll hold off and wait for the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams monthly special.

Last thing I want is to ship off a bunch only to get the phone call demanding $6 more for each card.
  • How abut the Indian card set of Fleer 1959?

There should be no issues with the Indian set.

In all seriousness, this issue was discussed recently as a result of a member getting a submission of these cards turned back because they were Ted Williams. I think we debated it to death, but the truth of the matter is that only a few cards (at worst, all the singles listed as star cards in the SMR) are not commons. Just like the '60 & '61 Fleer sets, there are only a few that are considered as star cards. The rest are commons.

Mistakes happen. That's what customer service is for.

    Grave oversight; probably racial profiling.

So, you're suggesting I go for it?

I'm all game, and will the fight the fight as much as I can, assuming people think I have a shot.

I'm talking about submitting about 25 cards from the set, none of which are listed in the SMR magazine.

DGB - my submission was logged in on 10/03 with 17 common cards from the set and I don't believe there is any problem with it. I hope I'm not jinxing it by posting this; I just won't step on any cracks when I go to lunch.image

  • Mark, any update on your submission? Did they grade under the special w/out problems? I'm getting my submission ready...

Not sure if I'll get a reply, but I also just sent this to both customer support and info e-mail addresses at PSA. Hopefully I'll get the answer I expect, and could then include the reply with my submission to eliminate any chance of rejection:

    Hi.

There seems to be some confusion as to what constitutes a "common" to qualify for the current monthly "PSA Set Registry 1950s Commons" grading special. Specifically, I am interested in the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set. This set consists of 80 cards, all featuring Ted Williams.

Some believe that since all cards feature Ted Williams, none will be considered commons for the specials, and if I send any in under the special I will get a call requiring more money, else the cards will be returned ungraded.

Others have told me any cards NOT listed individually in the published SMR can be considered commons, since most of the cards in the set book for $6 in EX condition, which is in-line (and often less) with "common" prices for other issues of that time.

Please advise on this issue. I am holding a 30 card submission until I can find an answer.

    Thanks

  • Just got my response, as hoped...

    -----------------

They are all commons with the exception of the individual cards listed
in the printed SMR. You can submit any of the cards not listed in the
    SMR for the special.
