A personal story

My Brother died on October 17. last year. My Dad and I had the unpleasant task of clearing out my Brother's apartment. My Father was in tears. Rightfully so. Then we found a little box. We opened it and inside was about 20 coins in 2X2 cardboard flips. My Father and I looked at each other and laughed. My Father had collected coins with all of us (3 boys). We never knew it was a part of my Brother's life. Those coins brought my Brother back home, personally, for us. The hobby has done wonderful things for me. That was the best of all. I'm a little drunk. Thanks for listening.

Thanks everyone. Sorry if this was a little OT. Finding that little box with coins was great. It got my Father thinking about the good times we all have had instead of what was gone. I think those coins really helped my Dad start turning the corner. And seeing my Father laugh at that moment was wonderful. I hope this did not come across as sappy and sad. My Dad and I collect coins together and each time we look at or talk about those coins it is a happy occasion that leads to more happy memories. I just think it's neat what a little box of coins could do. And I gotta watch out for that last glass of wine. image

    Kurt,

I am sorry to hear about your brother. It is so hard to lose someone and this year will be eight years since my Dad has been gone. He died when I was 21 and had always loved that I collected coins and learned so much about them with the great kinds of people that coin collectors are.

Right before I stepped out of the hobby (teenage years) I helped him assemble a collection of Franklin halves in BU because he really loved that design and wanted to do something with me that was just for the two of us. He found out he had cancer when I was 19 and died not long after I turned 21. My family was lucky that he was as thoughtful as he was because our family is well taken care of, but the pain still stings from time to time, even when I see Franklin Halves.

The good thing is that I still have his collection, and am helping my own daughters now at 29. This is the happiest I have been in a long time and for some reason I think and feel that he is just as happy for me too.

    Nick

PS-Yeah that last glass of wine is a b*****.
