They should get a (MC) qualifier. I'd suggest sending them to SGC if they're otherwise gradeable. I have an SGC 84 with a similar back.

Of the three major card graders - PSA is the only one that I know that will qualify a 1955 Bowman baseball card based on its back centering. I have seen quite a few examples of cards that were absolutely 50/50 centered both ways on the front that got either an O/C or a M/C qualifier because of back centering. In fact - on examples like yours, I've had PSA send them back to me with vouchers and simply a label calling them "miscut"

If you are certain that these are high-grade examples [I did not see the fronts] - PSA or GAI would be a better choice. For what it's worth, GAI 1955 Bowman graded cards often have an 'aura' around them that sometimes keep many collectors away from them. SGC would be my choice, too, with the realization that SGC-graded commons from this set have a very thin following, even at the SGC 88 level [which is tough]

Thank Mike, I was hoping you would chime in on this subject. I will have to re-evaluate the cards now. I am just glad I didn't do a 100 card sub when about 30-40 have the black of the next card!

    Two comments:

One - if the cards are oversized, you're lucky. Many have trimmed downed oversized 1955 Bowmans and gotten them into graded holders.

Two - for me, the more salient question on back centering is looking at the left side - if there is not a thin strip of the card back [the tan color] to the left of the black box, that seems to be more of a trigger on back centering than anything else. And many 1955 Bowmans are like that...

mike - the aura around the GAI Bowmans is from the part of the edge that used to be there. image

Nick - if only it were tha obvious. A large number of the high-grade GAI Bowmans measure standard size, if not slightly larger than standard. The most obvious thing that I've seen that does not look exactly right is that the cards seem a little too glossy, IMHO. I've seen enough examples that came out of packs from Paris, and none of them had gloss like that.

That being said - I would be more upfront if I could pinpoint what was going on, if anything. But I cannot. Hopefully this mystery will be solved sooner or later - but I think something as simple as a trim job does not seem to be the case.

  • There has been a recent (6 months) glut of Mint 9 55 Bowmans that have been graded. My guess is that many of the cards were oversized and trimmed down, I think it is that simple.

MINT from Global, or elsewhere, Fletch...?

The interesting thing is that for most of them I've seen, the borders are without chips on all four sides. Even if examples were trimmed - it would be unlikely [in my head anyway] - that there would exist a great number of them, especially with the dark borders, that would have spotless edges all the way around. I've never seen '55 Bowmans that big that they could justify that much trimming.

  • MS,
Unfortunately it was PSA, mostly commons in March or April of last year nearly 75 new 9s were graded. I think you are wrong when you say most of the 9s you are seeing measure up. If you look closely I think you will find many of them are actually undersized.
