What I've always wondered is why is a dime smaller than a nickel and worth more?

Are you telling me that MrEureka was the one that created the coffee table book concept that Kramer pioneered that was such a smash on Seinfeld? MrE... you missed your calling in Hollywoodimage

You people do know that Mr. Eureka was the real inspiration for Kramer, right?

  • OK...here is the real answer.

The model for the "mercury" dime was Elsie Kachel Stevens.
She and her husband wer tenants in one of the buildings owned by Weinman.

The term "Mercury" came about because of the wings on Miss Liberty's helmet.

Time to revisit this post, just discovered that Miss Munson had worked with Adolph Weinman on a statue in 1915 that depicted a Winged figure- coincidence? I think the reply that the model was a wife of a friend might have been to hide the real model from maybe his wife? or maybe the fact that she went on to become a famous nude model was not politically correct with her position on the dime or maybe her mental illness that she later suffered played a part- they sent people to insane asylums back then and the association with the dime model wouldn't have been ..you know, just saying. See article for more and also my other post on subject.

I think we need a revote or rewrite in the coin history books- or at least a mention of Miss Munson. I had family members who worked in that hospital and cared for this women for many years and all told the same story of how she was the model for dime imageimage

I feel funny saying this, but I don't remember this thread at all and it really cracked me up this time around.

  • Her husband was the poet Wallace Stevens, who authored the compilation "Harmonium" that was for a time well-regarded. I'm not a fan--here's a poem from it that I remember, in its entirety (if my memory is correct):

    The world is ugly
    and the people are sad

I'll take Dickinson and Teasdale, than you very much...

I'm surprised that the name of the model was not revealed in any of the publicity surrounding the introduction of the coin.

My Adolph A. Weinman signature :)
