Donations

All,

I'm in the process of donating 50,000+ cards to the local hospital in Naperville, IL. I have some card supplies but was wondering whether anyone else has supplies or even cards to donate. If so, please IM me or e-mail me at montige@bp.com.

Regards,

That is a great idea. I did this myself to the children's wing of a local hospital about 3-4 years ago. Because of the cost of shipping maybe people could locate to their local areas rather than mail to another area for the same type result. It is something that is very special if you can see in person. Not only will you make some kid's day but you can write off the donation as well.

I donated a total of 120,000 cards a couple of years ago and got a nice write-off on it.

Plus, I'm sure that those kids had a ball going through those things! image

    Great job Greg...keep it up!

  • Greg,

I live in DeKalb. PM me and I could dig up some stuff.

    Thanks,

  • If anyone is interested, along these lines, there is an organization called the ARIE Foundation in New York City that gives cards and collecting supplies to seriously ill, long-term care kids in New York Hospital (I think)(through NYU Medical School). Over the last 6 or 7 years, I probably have donated 250,000 cards, and 1,000 comics too. They also help out veterans.

    Here's a couple of links

I'd like to thank Noah Popp for his donation. I will be donating the cards to Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago.

I've got approximately 50,000 cards, mostly 80's and early 90's baseball commons, I'm in the process of assembling for donation in the LA area. I know my tax accountant is going to look to me for guidance on what kind of deduction to claim. Anybody have some knowledge?

You're allowed to deduct the FMV of the cards. I would argue that FMV is the price quoted in Beckett. I would estimate the number of cards per year and then assign a certain percentage as star cards (roughly 10 to 20%) and the rest as common cards. Price the cards according to Beckett and that is your deduction.

  • That is a great idea. My 15 year old goes to a childrens hospital once a month for outpatient therapy. He went today so the second week in Dec. I'll bring some sealed wax and such. Can't be fun in a hospital knowing Christmas is around the corner.

I donated about 300,000 cards a few years ago and that is basically the method I used. My CPA thought it would stand up in an audit as well as any other method. Knock wood - I haven't had to find out.
