German medal?

This brass piece is a bit smaller than a US half dollar. It looks like there was a loop at the top at one time. There is lettering on the edge..."AUS EROBERTEM GESCHUETZ". Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't know the word "geschuetz," but it probably means the medal was made of metal from captured weapons or cannon...

It commemorates German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 - Preussen
"Illegitimis non carborundum" -General Joseph Stilwell. See my auctions

Definitely related to the Franco-Prussian War.

Can you make out the second word in reverse center (Dem ... Heere = The ... Army). That could be a big clue.

    The rest, is as follows:

Gott war mit uns = God was with us

Ihm sei die Ehre = The honor is for Him (translated right?)

The crowned W is likely for Wilhelm I, king of Prussia at the time.

Oh, and Preussen is likely right on the edge inscription:

Aus erobertem geschütz = From the conquered artillery

The second word looks like "Itegreichen"...I might be off on the first letter though.

Its a Franco Prussian campaign war medal awarded to troops participating in the war. In this case, it looks like it was worn by the recipient since the reverse has more wear than the obverse. It was originally suspended from a ribbon with a small loop which has been broken off.

As I recall, some of the medals were cast from medal gathered from captured cannon.

These are fairly common since so may troops participated in the war. Worth a lot less damaged, however.

    Here's an example from ebay:

And here's another. Note that there are 2 varieties; the one with the edge inscription used captured medal.

Well, there you have it! image

I'm guessing the mystery word is Siegreichen, making it "The Victorious Army".
