T-206 Snodgrass error?

I noticed in the recent Beckett that they have listed a Snodgrass BAT UER - first time I have seen a reference to this error card. Does anyone know what the error or variation is? I have a T-206 Snodgrass with bat which I have always assumed is just slightly above common status since Snodgrass has some historical notiriety. Anyone have any information or opinions on this card?

  • There is no "S." it reads Nodgrass

Here's my Snodgrass, FWIW. No hint of any problems with the "S" on this one. So what happened, something got on the printing plate and blocked the "S"?

There were some questionable ones floating around about 4 years ago, graded and raw.

For clarification, the doctored Nodgrass errors always have the complete "S" not there. >95% of the authentic Nodgrass variations have at least a partial part of the "S" on the card. At the time, I believe that PSA graded a few and even SGC graded one of the doctored variations. FWIW - almost every doctored version was sold from the same outfit, whom I will not name here.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Close-up of "print error" (Yes! You can see parts of the "missing S"!)

edit: Some recent sales of the Nodgrass "print error"

    (June 10, 2005) Sotheby's & SPC Auction: T206 Error Group of 3 [Nodgrass, Beck (no B) & Lindeman (no B)] $9,000
    (Dec. 18-19, 2003) MastroNet Sports & Americana : T206 Nodgrass Variation PSA-2 $1,600
(Aug. 23-24, 2001) Ron Oser Enterprises: T206 "Nodgrass" Variation SGC-40 $3,839 (GEE! I HOPE THIS GUY DIDN'T GET A "DOCTORED CARD"?)

In addition, unrelated to the Nodgrass error, a "ghost overprint" of a Snodgrass sold for: $1107 in 2004 (i.e., at the 19th Century Only Auction) Info and scan

BTW, here's a very cool picture of a "ghost overlay on reverse" of a Frank Chance Portrait Red Background: scan of chance "ghost overlay"
