Rain

Would a light intermitant rain keep you indoors? Would it keep you from an old site that had promise?

I have walked in snow/rain mix to hunt arrowheads. It was funny too because when I went up to the door of the owners house to get permission, the nice elderly lady asked if I was crazy. I told her that there was a very fine line between diehard and dumbazz!

    She agreed.image

I've hunted a few times in light drizzle with plastic bags to cover the electronics, and have been caught in a couple major downpours. I carry a poncho on my belt now whenever there is a threat of rain, but won't risk the health of my machine if the rain is going to be steady.
Looks like we may have to postpone Buxton for a week. Weather dotcom and Accuweather both say rain Sunday. image

I think I've been on both sides of that line.
  • I use this when it's raining.

You should patent one for the ACE 250. You'd make a killing with all the 250's out there in treasure hunters hands!

I've detected in drizzle, and in a blizzard, once, when I lived in NC. (It was snowing and blowing like crazy that time but the ground wasn't frozen yet.)

  • I have hunted in a steady rain......But once the ground got soaked so bad the dirt couldn't be scooped out.....That was it.

I have to meet the Fockers on sunday next. My future daughter-in-law bought a house on the coast and her mother and other family will be there and it will be the first time we will have the chance to meet them. They plan on a little party.
But I'd go tomorrow if it wasn't pouring rain. I hear mixed reports. Some say rain some say partly cloudy.

I've heard just cloudy for Sunday. Where abouts in Buxton are you guys headed and when? Buxton is in my backyard! I have plans early in the morning, but I'd love a chance to meet you both, if possible. Mary

I'll check the weather again later and stick my head out the window in the morning. Anything short of steady rain and we're on. I have nothing to lose. My sister lives close so I can visit. Just wasn't sure if you'd want to drive 2 hours for a washout.
Sure MaryM, plenty of acrage for an extra coil.
I'll shoot out PMs in the morning.

Because marym is right on top of the sight we should get an eye witness account of what mother nature is doing there. The weather in N.H. could be different than what is happening in Buxton as well as where I live.

  • Seeing as how I'm currently in the "Land of Rainy Season--all year long", aka United Kingdom, If I didn't go out when it was a light rain, I wouldn't be able to get any detecting in. Honestly, it has been fairly nice here over the last couple of months with minimal rain during my off time so I have been able to get out and detect on a somewhat regular basis.

Mother Nature is not in a good mood! It's pouring, and I don't see an end in sight. image If it let's up I'll post another message.

Raining here also. Do you think the rain will make the coins come up to the surface like it does with worms?image
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • Wouldn't that be sweet! I've heard that if you're hunting the side of hill after a hard rain, you might actually find some coins that had been deeply buried beyond the scope of a dectector due to slight erosion. I've never tried it, but it makes sense! The forecast for this area is now saying possible clearing off by late afternoon. Not soon enough!

  • Clearing can take awhile, cloudy and no rain might be sooner.

  • Marym is it raining there right now? Accuweather says it would be cloudy. Just wanted to see how accurate their forecast is.

Rain has stopped down here. Looks like Buxton will be OK a little after noon.

I might be able to meet up later this afternoon. Let's hope you're still there! Mary

It wasn't too bad, drizzled a little but nothing noticeable. It was a bit windy. I only found a couple of lincolns and some trash. But I did find an exceptionally cool car radiator gauge, the type that sat out on the hood and it even has an intact alchohol tube. I'll see what it looks like after a clean up. Phut told me to get a picture of it for the relic award. I'll see what I can do.

You didn't miss out much on the hunt, but you did miss out on meeting two board members at one timeimage.
The weather was a bit raw. The only thing that got soaked was my sneakers.
The site was not productive. A few relics and a whole lot of trash. There were a few cool large relics. I talked to the owner after and he said we could have em. Hmmmm... If only I had a couple oxen.
Laserarts guage was the find of the day. Hope it cleans up good.
  • Do you think he wants that snow plow? I'd drive down there and snag it out with my truck.image

I don't know if you heard me phut as I was driving away, I said it was 120 miles to that place from my house.
"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".

That was one of the large relics I mentioned when he said we could take em. That and the carriage axle. I'll ask again to make sure.
Yeh I heard the 120. I'm another 60 miles south.
  • It's that lost opportunity to meet you guys that bothers me the most. It's interesting that it was only drizzle over in Buxton, because in Gorham at that time it was pouring! I shouldn't be surprised, I've seen it rain on one side of this house and not the other. Oh the strange and wonderful acts of Mother Nature image

  • You should have hopped in the car and went for a ride . We were visible from the road for a couple of hours and then again when we exited the woods. The license plate on my truck parked beside the road would have been a dead giveaway as to the right place or not.

  • Let me guess, it reads Lasrart or something close? I'm trying to remember how many charactors we're allowed on a license plate. So, they next time you 2 birds (as my mother was fond of saying) get together to hunt, let me know and I promise to drive through hurricane winds, torrential downpours, noreasters, you name it, I'm there! lol

Laserart, I sent an e-mail about the plow. If he doesn't reply(which is often) I'll pop in the next time I visit sis. It may be a week or so before I know, but It's not going anywhere.

<< <i>You're not gonna go md'ing in a blizzard with wind chills..... >>

I'll be there in shorts and a tee shirt. Though with the wind chill I may have to wear a hat.

Dubba, where are you at now?

  • I was in Baltimore last weekend (and Monday). The first day I was there (Saturday) it must've rained more water than there is in the harbor! Sunday it didn't rain, but on the way home on Monday it did. Because of that, a five hour trip took 7 hours. Today, if you took one step outside you looked like you just came out of a pool. As a matter of fact it hasen't stoped yet, and it's been going on since I woke up and definately before that.I can't stand it. I wan't to get out and MD soon, especially this time of year since it's not too hot or cold, But aparently it's way toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo wet!

"If I had a nickel for every nickel I ever had, I'd have all my nickels back".
  • Yeah, but not the housing where all of the buttons and electronics are. I don't wan't to risk the life of my detector to a plastic bag. Not that it's a bad idea, I just feel safer if I didn't use it in that weather. BTW: It finally (and just) stopped, for now at least. i'm telling you, It's like Noah's Ark all over again up here.

Dubba, I may be doing a southern tour this winter. I'll give ya a shout.

    << <i>Stop it Phut, you're turning me on! >>

woohooimage Ok marym, I'll wear a jacket.

Perfect MD weather here today. No rain and cold enough to keep the bugs away, so I fired myself at 1pm and hit the dirt.image
  • I said it would come back, and it did. It started againbefore I woke up and hasen't stoped since. I'm telling you guys. These are the biggest puddles i've ever seen in my life! Infact as I look out my upstairs window right now, the neighbors across the street's driveway is being flooded as well as the street. Oh well, they're not very nice neighbors anyway. I still think I can get out of the driveway with one car at least. My Ford Excursion. It's tall because it's a 4x4, But the 5 others I don't think I can get out, especially the Corvette and Lamborghini. The Weather man said it'll rain all this weekedn too.image. Normally I don't believe a weather man, but after all this I do. I wan't to go out and MD SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD! But it's like having a huge bucket of water dumped on your head with no end in sight. As soon as it clears up I'm going to MD.

Raining here in south east NH again also. No major puddles, but all the streams that have been dormant since June are flowing again.
  • We've had almost 1/10 of an inch of "overcast".

I wanted to get out this afternoon, but by the time I was free it had started raining again. I overheard someone say that ti's going to rain until it snows. <sigh> I'm beginning to think that may be true!

  • I went to my son's house down in Owls Head. It was still pouring out but I went and swept the front lawn anyway. Didn't dig anything but the ground is loaded with signals suggesting silver coins all over the place. There is a big rope swing in the front yard hanging from an old oak tree. Dozens of signals all around it. Maybe the next time I go I'll have the time to dig it all up and it won't be raining. The house was built in 1920 so it has potential to offer something nice.

  • Oooooooh that sounds like an awesome site! Wednesday, Thursday & Friday are looking like decent days, the problem is by the time I get home from work and have dinner, it's almost dusk. Saturday's prediction, you guessed it, is more rain. image

  • Well the thing is it's a little over 200 miles round trip. I'll need more of a reason to go there than check out a couple of beeps. Today I brought a down load of big items he couldn't get into his car and it was a kind of housewarming at the same time. If it wasn't for that I would have stayed home staring out the window watching the rain come down.

Sounds like your son has a cool site to MD on Laserart. You been to the 1846 site yet?
I got out to my trashy site today. Found a gold ring, but zero old coins.
  • Not yet, too much rain. I just had a thought I might go to the old cellar holes and scout for deer at the same time. Everything is just so soggy.

  • I use a plastic back to cover my box, I have been out when its Hailing and when its Raining gumball drops...As long as its a productive spot....
    Love them busts!
I am Looking to Buy California Tokens too.
  • I'm sure if I tried digging a hole it would fill with water we've had so much rain. The ground is soggy and even though the rain stopped 2 days ago water is still running across the back yard.
