Can anyone identify this Willie Mays?

image

Measures about 4x6, blank backed. It isn't a Dexter Press, which is what I originally thought. Seller stated it was Uncatalogued, but that seems hard to believe, given the era and what the card looks like.

Anyone?

Aren't the MB's black and white?

I think that's some kind of a team postcard - I'm thinking MorrellMan asked about this card somewhere?
It's blank backed if I recollect.

Willie looks a bit on the older side? So I would say this was toward the latter days with the Giants?
Early 70s - before he went to the Mets?

  • stone..i looked at an example on ebay and it isnt a milton bradley.

It's not a card on the psa registry. Has to be some sort of postcard produced, as you said, in the early to late 70's.

If the card is comtemporary - then it is from the early 70s - he left the Giants around 71 and went to the Mets.

Could this be a proof - which something is printed on the back for different companies or something - kind of like a trade card for advertising.

Perhaps it was a handout at a "fan appreciation day" or some sort of ballpark handout? Perhaps a Sunday newspaper insert?
  • I looked in the "2005 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards" and found that this Willie Mays card shown by Throwdown is most likely as Mike and stevek indicated. I found an entry for the 1950-1960's Pittsburgh Pirates Postcards. This item looks exactly like the Willie Mays card. Albeit that some vender made the Mays card in the early 70's just prior to Mays going to the Mets (as it is obvious the Mays photo is depicting the HOF'er in the twilight of his career). The catalog indicates the following:

"This listing encompasses the issues of several different postcard publishers who supplied black-and-white cards to the players for use in answering fan mail. Several different types of card stock are found, both matte and glossy. Some cards have postcard markings on the back, others do not, especially those picturing players in the 60's style sleeveless style uniforms. Because it is likely other players and poses will be reported, a description of each pose is included."

As I indicated previously the photo in the catalog is identical to that of the Mays photo (only the Mays photo is in color) including the white boarder with the same format of the type written players name in a wider white base of the card. The only difference would be that the older post cards were not typed in all upper case as on the Mays card. It could still have been a give away at the ball park as well?

Did you notice that one of the button's on May's jersey appears to be either not buttoned or is missing image

Minimeister - above and beyond the call of duty. I have the same card. Thanks for the investigation.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
