Leaning toward the Darkside

Howdy folks,

I've been spending most of my time on the US Forum since joining. I'm a long time collector of Morgans and other misc widgets. For 6 years I lived in Kuwait and found myself collecting darkside stuff (Greek, Egyptian, Spanish, Iraqi, Kuwaiti, and many other coins). It seems that I will be returning to Kuwait to live and work which presents me with the opportunity for even more darkside finds. Any recommendations on coinage to look for with a nice price to value ratio?

I found some very nice old Persian and Indian coins in the souks in Kuwait City -- both of those countries are popular among collectors. Just be careful of fakes. image
  • I got a few nice Indian Silver Rupees from the markets in Bahrain the last time I was there and a nice set of Aswan Dam Commems in Kuwait. Maybe I can come up with some good finds this time while I'm there.

Are the rupees heavily counterfeited? I've been happy to find that nice BU rupees of George V sell for under $20 in the US. I've seen a number of counterfeit British trade dollars from China, but I don't know what fakes are popular in the Middle East (besides sovereigns).

Most are real, but circulated, because those were used as currency in Kuwait and Bahrain during the British protectorates. You're better off buying nice BU examples in the US.
