Goldberg Auction Lot Arrived

Received this today. Prussian Thaler of Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1840-1861) 1861-A, So-Called Death Thaler. I've never seen a (relatively) new slab as badly scratched as this one...made the coin very difficult to photograph. - Preussen

That is one awesome coin. NGC holders are notorious for being easily scratched.

Dimitri: I knew someone would ask this

. Well, it's from the year of his death but it's a regular issue Thaler, rather than a special issue or commemorative to honor him. No coins were made to specifically honor him so the 1861 is refered to as a Death Thaler, although it was not intended as such. - Preussen
