Question about PSA autograph encapsulation

I have a ton of Hall of Fame baseball autograph cuts and would love to have them encapsulated and stamped "authentic".......however, whenever I get around to sending off submissions for grading, I always end up skipping these cards because the fees confuse me. For example, on the submission price page on PSA, it states that any autograph can be encapsulated for $20 if valued at less than $1,000. Sounded simple enough to me......except when I looked in the "autograph fee schedule" to find high different prices. For example, a Heine Manush autograph is listed as a $100 fee, Ray Schalk a $75 fee.......is the encapsulated simply an added $20 to these prices? Or is authenticating smaller items, such as cuts, cheaper? Why would it state "only with a declared value of $1000 or under"?.......I tried emailing collector's universe but didn't get a reply. Can any of y'all help me?

Thanks,

Joe

  • Good luck on getting an email reply. I've sent a ton about stars not listed, encapsulating, etc etc and have yet to get any sort of reply....

    Really?

Everytime I have emailed PSA I have always recieved a prompt reply.

I usually get the real reply within 1 day.

    Good for you.
  • I believe I am correct on this. As long as the autographed item will fit into one of PSA's holders, you can send it in under the $20 fee. The increased fees are if you send the item in and have the autograph authenticated with a certificate from PSA/DNA and a strand of DNA placed on item. As far as the $1000 or less statement, I would think this may apply if you tried to send in a cut Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, etc. for the $20 fee, which PSA would likely reject. It sounds like the names you mentioned should be fine under the $20 fee. If I am wrong on any of this, hopefully someone will correct me.

I have a HOF Auto set in the Registry and would be interested in seeing your autos if you have scans.

Correctamundo, wufdude helped me out awhile back with the same answer pretty well.

I've submitted many of my SignatureCuts cards under the $20 autograph authentication/slabbed special, many autographs being worth $300, $100 whatever and it's $20 all the time.

If you have cuts.. something like this you can glue it to an index card and PSA/DNA will then authenticate it and holder it for $20.

Or you can do what I do and make a card out of it or get me to do it for you.

    Example..

Forgot to mention.. If the declared value is more than $1,000 it would be $60 to authenticate/slab.

  • I thought that the encapsulation fee was cheaper if you sent in the PSA card that came with the item with the cert. no. on it so you are only paying for encapsulating and not repaying to have it authenticated?

I don't know about that but it doesn't apply here.. His stuff isn't authenticated yet from what I gather.

  • I meant original PSA graded items when Spence was with PSA. They used to come with a little card that had a certification number on it and you could look the number up on the PSA DNA web page to see if the card matched the item. I'm sure now that Spence is on his own, his items will now probably come back "Questionable".....
  • Regarding your question, it costs $10 to have an autographed card that has a certificate with it slabbed and graded, either with a grade or simply "Authentic".
  • Thanks for the answers. PSA should pay you a Customer Service stipend since you are the only one that has answered my questions regarding encapsulating autograph fees.......

Here is a sample of some autographs I want to get slabbed (images are resized to fit in 1 picture). The Sisler autograph is nearly like 4 1/2" x 5 1/4"......does PSA make a holder big enough for that?

By the way, Knuckles, those autograph cut cards you make are quite awesome......that's a great idea. Also, thanks "Wufdude" for helping with the fee questions

    thanks,

    Sorry.....here's the link
  • Neat items you have there. That size seems bigger than what I believe PSA will holder however I am not absolutely positive about that. I tried to have some autographed TCMA postcards from around 1980 holdered and I believe they were around 4 x 6 but PSA would not holder them.
  • I emailed PSA back in August and the response I got was 5 3/4" x 8" was the largest size they could slab at this time. At the Set Registry Luncheon this year in Chicago Joe Orlando touched on the subject of authenticating wire photos though I don't recall any specific comments on encapsulation or size limitations regarding the photos. It would be fantastic if they could come up with something for 8x10 sized items, even if it isn't a conventional PSA slab something tamper proof or tamper evident with a flip would be great.

Any idea on the cost to encapsulate a cabinet Perez Steele Greatest Highlight that has already been PSA/DNA verified?
