Home Metal Detecting

Oct05 27th update

Decided to hit a spot that I haven't been looking forward to hitting. It's the back yard of the riverbank house. The former owner was a rooferimage Every square foot has atleast one or two nails or small chunks of flashing. I took my time and dug anything that moved the meter at all. Only ended up digging four or five nails, a couple 22 shells and....

My machine and I are finally starting to speak the same language. Now if I can only teach it what large silver and gold means.

This button belongs to The King.... Should I give it back?
image

A little pitted, but better than most I've found
image

I'm stumped on this one... Couldn't find it in Krause under Canada or the many British colonies. Looks like it is 1791.

Woof
image

With these and all the buttons I found I can start a sewing business. If I can find anyone that likes to dress really retro.
image

I'm calling this my dammit coin. It's from a new site that I found on Saturday 01Oct. This site has been a party spot for quite a while and is loaded with drunk debris. I was kind of hoping to find nothing worthy there and this thing pops up..... Dammit...... I gotta get more five gallon buckets.

I'd have guessed it was a Talbot, Allum, and Lee token (which is a Conder token but also listed in the Redbook, I think), but the non-ship side of yours looks different.

    imageimage

Could be from the same die with a different flip side, though- that happened a lot with Conders.

Edit- on second thought, no. The sails are different. And the lettering. Close, but no cigar.

But I agree that it might be some other kind of Conder token. In fact, I would bet on it.

It bugs me because that is familiar, somehow...

I dunno enough about Conders, not having the D&H book. Post it on the Darkside.

    And, oh, Tim...

How many large cents is that, now? Geez!

Cool. I didn't even think about Conders and was about to throw it in the unknown pile. Thanks John.
Rob, counting slugs and giveaways to lot owners........I'd guess over twenty.
Woo hoo, no poison ivy this time, and none at 2 of the new sites. It's scary now that the leaves are gone. The roots still bite.
  • Great finds once again! I wish I could get out and get some detecting in...

First off, it behooves me to point out that YOU SUCK, PHUT!!

That being said, I congratulate you on your awesome finds. I wonder if the coin you found is a Conder Token or not. There were other coins minted in other territories too, such as Jamaica, Bermuda, etc. The Conder that Aethelred has for sale is dated 1792, not 1791. Nevertheless, the obverse is very similar and it might be the same coin.

This was the river house you mentioned? Lots of cool stuff. How close to the river did you go? BTW, Sunday is looking partly sunny now so it should be acceptable though cooler than it has been.

That is a token from Lancashire, Liverpool. Although common, they are quite popular because of the ship design.

Here is a pic of a slightly better one:

Wow, a whole lot of you sucks and a visit from the darkside dead king... I'm humbled. Thanks people.
Thanks for the info and pic Aethelred.
Laserart, I've been in the river at low tide. The mud is only a couple inches deep and I like to take advantage of the waterproof coil.
Cool weather on Sunday would be nice. We can hit the house ruins without worrying about bees.

Trapped inside today due to rain so I figured I would break out the camera and do a small update.
    These are yesterdays finds.

The spoon thing is kinda neat. My guess is there were 2 of them and they were used to shape musket balls. Anyone else have a guess?
More buttons. They must have had cheap thread in the late 1700s. I must have over 100.

Couldn't find this in Krause, but narrowed it down to French Colonies 1789A King Louis XVI ?SOUS.

Does the spoon have any kind of a connecting place for another spoon? My first impression before I read what you thought it was , was maybe a salt spoon.

  • phutphut Posts: 1,087
If it was used for musket balls it would've had some kind of wooden handle so you wouldn't burn fingers.
You could be right about salt spoon, or some kind of measuring spoon for baking. Just throwing guesses around.
  • laserartlaserart Posts: 2,255
A bullet mold was usually hinged on the ball end. when closed it formed a tiny hole in which to pour the molten lead. That spoon doesn't quite fit the criteria.image

Very cool.... thanks for the post. Where are you finding this stuff?
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • phutphut Posts: 1,087
This stuff is all from the new site that the chewed up 2 cent piece came from. I've been there 3 times for a total of around 7 hours. It takes nearly a half hour to walk the half mile through the woods. Some hairy rock climbing and crossing water 3 times. Twice by walking across fallen trees and once by jumping rocks. Some of the modern finds are along way to the site so I'm not really wasting the time.
    image

Don't know what this is, but it looks like a miniature serving tray.
    image

Large buttons (2) Nearly the size of a half dollar.
    image

Small button. Can't read the backmark, but the front says New Hampshire. The picture is strange. I can't tell if it's a Viking ship or a carnival.
    image

    Found a few more IHCs. 1875, 1901, 1871, 1884, 1880, and 1899.
I thought the one on the right was an ancient or something until I cleaned it up a little. Pine trees do a number on copper.

    Silvered

Again.... The pits are the pits. Bummer.... this thing still has mint luster.
    image

Again. Cute little earring. Do people still wear em there?
    image

There's gold in them thar hills. 14k men's wedding band. Looks nice next to the engagement ring I found last year. Guess I have to find a ladies wedding band now.
    image

All the large copper pieces are slugs. Too bad..... nice size variety.
  • Did you go in the rain? Nice finds. Close to home?

It was a little wet, but I figured better wet than nuttin.
It was fairly close to home. I have 10 sites within 10 miles, and I try to give them all a little time here and there. Mass and NH have been good to me this year. I was hoping to add Maine to the list also, but haven't found anything worthy there since the tintype photos last year.

Welcome to the MD forum Rhack.
Sorry bout the keyboard SilverDreamsimage I kinda soggied mine up a bit also as I cleaned off the gunk and realized what I'd found.
Thanks John. Welcome back. Are you back, or borrowing time again?
30AnvZ28... Thanks. I have that fear of pissing people off sometimes. Not my intent at all. I just got lucky with a couple sites early in my MD career. I'm sure every MDer has there ups and downs, and this summer has been my up. Winter is on its way and I'll be left drooling over other peoples finds, as was the case last winter. Not to mention the fact that these sites are drying up fast and it's taking me a lot longer each time to pluck the decent stuff.
