Is the warping a common issue with the 1985 wax boxes?

I just finished ripping a 1985 wax box, and almost every card was slightly warped, with 3 ruined cards in each pack (2 from the decomposing gum (it bled through two cards), 1 from the wax and the impression of the gum in the pack below).

Recently I ripped a 1982 Topps Football wax box, and had no problem with warped cards. Only 2 cards in each pack were ruined (1 by gum, 1 by wax). Unfortunatly, one of the gum ruined cards was a Lott rookie! image

I put some of the nicer 85s under a PSA slab box (full) and a shoe-box loaded with toploaders. I put the rest of the 85s in an 800 ct box, and wedged in some junk cards to try and get everything flat. I'll let them be for a week or so then check back.

  • I currently have a 85 Topps PSA Dallas Cowboys set in progress . So far i have Dorsett and Michael Downs both in PSA 9

If anyone here is selling any of their graded 85 topps ( mainly interested in 9's and 10's ) and have some Cowboys please feel free to send me a PM with what you have and price

    thanks, Dave
  • Digicat- Warping depends more on how the cards were stored. That's why we always try to store cards (and any paper collectible) in a cool, dark, place with little/low humidity.

Also, give the cards time to "unwarp". Remove the weight every day for a few minutes. Let the cards breathe, the place the weight back on again. You should see a big difference in 7-10 days.

Fabfrank: I've got the cards in penny sleeves, inside Card Saver 1's right now. Will this allow for optimal "unwarping", or should I take them out and press them raw?

  • I pressed mine without the plastic sleeves. I did put 2 lower grade cards on the bottom and on the top of the pile.
Split the pile in half and try both ways. See which works better

Does any 85 collectors know of a card of any Patriots player that might have a full headshot with his helmet one? I know this might sound like a wierd reguest, but the old style Patriot helmet has always been my favorite and I would like to get one in 85 in PSA 9 or better.

Edit: You can forget it, I checked the #1 set and found that there were only a couple shots with the helmets on and they were not full view shots.

So, how "perfect" does a card need to be to get a PSA 10 from this set? I know that corners, centering, and surface issues make/break cards, but how about those edges?

I've noticed some cards in PSA 10 holders with that slight edge chipping that's common with this set. Is it just the whim of the grader with that, or is that an anomaly?

The corners are the key for PSA 10s. Because of the black borders, I feel PSA holds this issue to a higher standard in comparison to white bordered sets - especially the corners.

PSA seems to allow for very minor edge chipping under 10x only. If there's any chipping visible to the naked eye, then there can be paper loss.

Maybe chipping isn't the right word.. for instance, check these out...

    Link 2

On the bottom edge of these cards, you can see some visible spots of white, especially in Link 1. It could just be the scan, I wish I had a higher res scan to examine.

  • anyone got a price on a recent sale of a 85 rack box?
  • $325 - $350.
  • SDavidSDavid Posts: 1,584 ✭✭
ouch. A cello box just went for $117 on ebay.

Why are rack boxes so much more expensive? $325-350 is waaaaayyyyyyyy too much for that box imo.

Is that the market value, or just what certain unopened dealers charge?
  • The only National dealer that sometimes stocks '85 Topps FB rack-pack boxes is Baseball Card Exchange. He had (3) boxes at this year's National Convention ... $350 per box. I purchased one for $325, another was sold at the show and the final box was purchased on Steve's website.

The number of cards in rack-pack boxes is nearly equal to (2) wax boxes. The cards are usually is better condition and none will be lost to wax stains, gum stains or corner damage that cellos & wax packs offer - which can be (3-5) cards per pack. A majority of the key PSA 9 and PSA 10 singles have come from rack-pack boxes.

In addition to these reasons, rack-pack boxes are hard to locate. So, supply and demand slightly drives up the price.

i picked up a rack box for $350 from BBCE about 3 months ago. i've opend 6 packs and sold a few more. i've been listing them on the bay starting at $9.99 and sold a few. i may list a few more this week.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks guys was trying to get a hadle on a fair price for a fellow board member.
Anyway the going price now seems to be $410 to $450 as that was what i was quoted by two of the best upopened pack/box/case dealers out there.

ps both places i checked did not have any in stock and said they are very hard to come by,prices quoted would be what they would sell them for if they had any

    ffrank,

Your grades seem on sort of a 'cut line' between 8's and 9's. Do you attribute the 8's to centering, edges, corners, etc and/or general appeal? My guess is that there's very little difference between these 8's and 9's as your screening process was probably very consistent.
  • Does anyone on this thread have an empty 1985 (or other years)box with Lawrence Taylor on the bottom of the box? I am interested in buying from you if you do.

  • Bug- with 85 Topps, corners are very important. 1 corner with slight (tiny) bit of white MIGHT get a 9, if all the edges are smooth. The other key to 85 (once you have determined that the corners are fine) is knowing the difference between chipped edges and rough cut. Chipped edges will show white. Rough cut will show cardboard threads but no white.
The 8's I got would probably garner a 9 on another submission. So they would be considered hi end.

Arnyvee- LMk which cards you are interested in. I think I only put 2 cards into my registry, so the rest will be available for sale. You can PM me or email me at FFMAZZ@AOL.COM

  • Frank you open those racks yet?
  • Hi Art. I opened the "extras" and came up with some candidates. I haven't opened the rest of the box yet. I have quite a few cards ready now to submit. I'll see if i can go through the box and put together a submission by the end of the month.
I'll let you know how those extras do, but the quality was better than the wax box I broke. I'm hoping the grades will be better than above.

Well, just added my 1985 Topps Football set to the registry. Just a start as I have less than 20 cards at this point. The good thing is that they are all PSA 9 or better! image

Just added Frank's 9s and I've moved into 16th place. image

Would've been 15th, but there's another new '85 Topps collector joining the fray. Looks like we are going to have some interesting things going on with a few new '85 collectors in the mix along with myself.

Again, anyone out here that upgrades to 10s and has extra 9s or just does a submission and ends up with 9s, please drop me a line. image

  • Hi Guys, This is the first time that I am posting on this thread. I really like the look of these cards. I mostly like the look of these cards in a PSA holder. I would have been happy with just a nm-mt raw set but a nm-mt set in PSA holders would look really nice. I noticed that most of you go after the PSA 9 cards. Are the PSA 8 cards the rejects? The SMR on PSA 8s is only $2 for commons. I'll bet I could get them in lots for less than that if I looked hard. The PSA 8s are cheap enough but all of the collective shipping costs is what kills the idea. I wonder how much it would cost to put together a complete PSA 8 set? I'd like some advise on my idea if anyone has any. Also, does anyone have any spare PSA 8s laying around to get me started? Perhaps if I had some to look at up close, I'd get the black fever like the rest of you. PM me or email me at nbdowney@msn.com - Thanks, Neil
  • sixdartsixdart Posts: 821 ✭✭
    Neil,

PSA 8s ae usually sold in lots on EBAY. Individual sales aren't really worth the time or the expense, so people accumulate them until there's enough for a decent lot. Currently on EBAY, King77 (a.k.a. CU member metalmike20) has a 24 card lot listed ... 1985 Topps Footbll PSA Lot (24). The higher population PSA 9s sell fairly cheap, so many go for that mix - an 8.50 GPA goal.

Most PSA 8s are usually very nice looking cards to the average collector. Many can be high-end NM-MT examples, but 10x viewing exposes every flaw. Flaws that are missed with white bordered cards. The veteran collectors will try not to waste their time & money sending in cards that don't have at a shot at a 9. Once you've owned PSA 8s & PSA 9s and get a feel for them ... you can tell the difference. So, I wouldn't call PSA 8s rejects. My set is now 100% complete at a 9.17 GPA and includes several PSA 8s and a few PSA 7s.

I think that PSA 9 is a modern standard, but these cards are unique because they're not easy to grade mint. Simply opening the product does not guarantee mint cards like many would think, therefore, unopened material does not provide a very good return on your investment. Because of this, I think PSA 9s and PSA 10s are undervalued. There are still several low pop PSA 9s and single PSA 8s (no 9s) that are very challenging within this set. At one point, Chris Renaud was even attempting this set. He had assembled and retired the highest GPA '71 Topps Baseball set ... also a black bordered set.

Good luck in your quest! I advise everyone not to start building this set ... the black borders are addictive. image
