Images of my Siberia 10 Kopek

I just could not resist this one at our local show yesterday. It is large, 47mm diameter, 4 mm thick, and 70 grams. 1781 was the last year of issue, and I just found this coin too good to pass up.

Hope you enjoy the Images.

Nice coin, Refrema! I see this is about as close as you can come to plate money in an "ordinary" coin...image

Very cool. That would be too good to pass up.
  • Oldshep--

I first saw one of these that was not in great condition about a year ago, and have been looking for a really nice one ever since. I saw a few in the 200 to 300 dollar price range, but never one like this one. It is exactly the color shown in the image, and the best one that I have found. It was more than I wanted to pay, ($400) but when you find a great coin, sometimes you have to ignore your plans and just do it. I know that I would have regretted passing it up.

    Thanks for your comments

Your did an excellent job Bob. Trust me, there aren't too many Siberian 10 kopeks coins that are in that nice grade. image To make matters worse, Russian coins are selling like mad hot cakes. image

Anything that weights as heavy or heavier than the Russian 5kopek monster coins should be classified by WMDs... imagine getting hit by 1 ruble worth of those... It's horrible. image

I wonder if it was struck on a wrong planchet (but were there even such planchets??). Or maybe a piedfort or pattern?

  • I honestly have no idea. The thickness of this coin easily exceeds 5.5mm-6mm, diameter 4.1cm. But this is the most ridicious 5kopek coin that I have, when the average is supposed to be around 40-50grams. I don't think I have seen any other 5 kopek monster coin that comes even close to 60grams, forget 70grams. image

That Siberian 5kopek coin is somewhat overweight too, as the normal weight of such is supposed to be around 65.52grams.

That is a very cool coin, it looked familiar to me so I went and looked at my coppers and noticed I have a smaller version of the coin. This one is 31mm and pretty worn, is it a 5 kopek? Not sure, I don't have an 18th century krause yet. I think the date is 1770, it didn't come out very clear on the scan. I have a bunch of these big chunky copper coins some have verdigris and are pretty worn but they are seriouly large coins.

  • No, that's a 2 kopek. If you have plenty of the exact same kopeks, that is a Siberian kopek. Those are scarcer than the Russian ones. image

The Siberian ones are noted by their emblem, just like the one that you have on the second image. image

I sold one last year. It was a nice one, but not quite as nice as yours. image
