Coin Shops Operating Hours

Hello everybody,

Whenever I visit a coin shop I have noticed that the hours of operation for almost all coin shops regardless of who the owner is almost always the same. Virtually all the coin shops I visit seem to be open from Tuesday through Saturday, Saturday usually open with shortened hours. It seems that there aren't any shops open on Sundays, and surprisingly very few open on Mondays.

Are there any reasons in particular why a lot of coin shops are closed on Mondays? I would think that being open on Sunday is a good idea since there may be more shoppers who have more time than they would on the weekdays.

Many shows are on Sundays. Some dealers only day off is Monday.

  • Like already said, shows are on Sunday. Monday because it reduces operating costs and, like previously stated, gives the dealer a single days off. What I hate is one dealer in my area who never shows up and closes halfway thru the day almost daily. I don't go to him anymore.
Everything I write is my opinion.

Speaking of that, I know one dealer who has a hard time keeping his posted hours. This guy often doesn't show up for an entire day, and on the days he shows up he ends up leaving for hours at a time during the middle of the day. Sometimes he will have a sign on the door that says "return at 1:00", and doesn't return for the rest of the day!

Could we possibly be thinking of the same coin shop?

Are erratic hours the norm for coin shops? I know of many coin shops that do a very good job in keeping their posted hours.

It always seemed strange to me that hobby stores of every kind seem to be open 9-5, then short hours on Saturday. I'm not second guessing those who do it for a living. But it seems to me that a store that caters to leisure hours would be open when people aren't at work. Maybe 11:00 to 2:00 and then 5:00 to 7:30. Open Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 4:00.

Right? Isn't odd. I've always thought it was really bad business, but, perhaps because dealers do alot of precious metal sales they need to monitor the market for fluctuations? Just an idea.

I think I know who you are referring to...if it is who I am thinking of, you'd be surprised to learn that he lives less than 1000 feet from his shop...yet he drives to his shop when he actually shows up.

Speaking for myself only, I wish to be at the store when it is open, so if I am at a coin show, I cannot be at the store.

I tell everyone to call before coming by, just to make sure that I am there.

As far as specific days, if I am in town on a Sunday, I very well may be in the store trying to catch up. If I am there, I will answer the phone and be happy to see anyone that wishes to come by.

I would think that the location of where you are is pending the situation also. Mostly what people here have already noted is coin shows are on weekends and usually on Sunday. A dealer normally wouldn't be in two places at the same time unless he is a large dealership. As an example of that is in the downtown area of Chicago there are numerous coin dealers but since the downtown area is dead on weekends, their stores are usually closed. On the other hand the suburban stores and dealers are usually open on weekends and ignore the shows because they do better where they are located. Examples are the 4 to 6 coin dealers at the Wolf's flea market in a near West Suburb. Hobby shops that deal in coins are also open on weekends and Mondays around here because they deal with other stuff besides coins. In fact I can't remember seeing a place that deals in only coins since I was a kid and that was about 50 years ago.

If you're open on Saturday, you SHOULD close on Monday. Just for your health. Mental health.

In my instance, I just did a running study of each day and found Saturdays to be very costly due to the amount of "Lookie Lous." I was doing M-S and after looking at it closed Saturdays to my very great pleasure.

We finally did the last 3 years closing Wednesdays also. If they want what ya got, they'll adapt.

Can't say that about most businesses but with coins, you can truly be an INDEPENDENT businessman.

  • I understand that many dealers have coin shows to go to on Sundays a lot of the times. Surely, there isn't a show on every weekend, so I would think that there are more weekends where a dealer is in town as opposed to being at a coin show.

Personally I think it's a good idea for dealers to be open on Sundays. I believe that foot traffic would probably be very heavy on Sundays as opposed to Mondays or any weekday early in the week.

I, personally, am amazed by the short hours most shops seem to keep. I guess if I had my dream job, I would want dream hours too.
