Newbie with more goodies

Its me again. Went out for a couple of hours this afternoon and found an 1865 indian head, another colonial copper of some kind...real corroded, I can just make out a head/bust shape (mans) with GEORGIUS (at least it looks like). Cannot, as yet, make out anything on the reverse. And, another large copper of some kind that is totally unidentifiable. Will take a closer look later tonight. Oh, and I also found a musket ball. Cool.

  • I've done a little bit of searching after going over what I can see on the colonial copper. It is definitely the bust of George II and, most likely, a half penny. This puts the date in the 1740-1760 period....cannot make out a date. The reverse just barely shows a seated woman holding a floral array of some sort. The obverse bust is facing left....looking at the GEORGIUS. Thats about all I can make out right now. So corroded it probably is not worth the copper is made of!

    Deerfield Mass. right?
Cool finds. There is a lot more there.
  • Massachusetts.....western Mass. in the town of Deerfield. Used to be the "northwest frontier" back in the late 1600s and early 1700's. A few massacres, lots of indian skirmishes and a center of activity during the King Phillip war. A real colonial region.....too bad most areas are private property and difficult, if not impossible to hunt on. However, lots of farm fields and I know several people who own farms/houses dating to the early 1700's.

I think I'm getting spoiled. I'm sure there will be a dry period soon, but, I'm still psyched.

  • Am I the only one that doesn't believe this guy?
  • Mpeter,

I will try to get some pictures up today. I can understand why you wouldn't believe these finds, however, remember that the coppers are in pretty rough shape. The reale is silver and is in great shape. How, exactly, do you get pictures posted after taking them with a digital camera? What is the best background?

    What's not to believe MPeter?
I've been working four sites in Mass. and a couple in NH over the summer and have been finding the same type of stuff. Of the twenty plus times I've been at these sites I've only come up empty five times. If I count bullets, musket balls and axe heads then I've found something every time. It's really a history rich area.

So far, it looks like maybe. If you have never found an old coin it's easy to have some doubt. To date my oldest coin is 1837.

  • To find out how to post pics, go to the Anouncements&News forum and there will be a thread about the topic. I'd post a link for you but I've' got one of those wireless routers on the computer I'm using now and i'm afraid my connection will short and i'll be logged off for the 6th time in 15 minutes.

  • Ooooh, that ain't right. I have wireless and it works very well.

  • The computer with the wireless router (linksys) is on the other side of the house and downstairs. Plus wireless phones and a ton of metal crap(not dug up, it's workout equipment, TV's, etc.) that all destruct the connection. You know, it's funny, sometimes it works better than the hardwired one with the router (which recieves the packet from this one with the adapter) but other times it's terrible, like a few moment's ago. Now it's great. so here's the link I was afraid to post before, because of my connection.
