My new toys from the show this weekend

I will get pictures in a day or so, but here is the grand & unusual mix.

A 1930s large silver Viking Ship Plaque from Norway
Sweden 1 ore 1626 Klipping VF or better
Russia (Siberia) 10 Kopek 1781 VF or better. Very large Copper

I have been reading about cobs & Pillar Dollars for the last couple weeks, so I decided to get a couple
My first Cob, Patosi Mint 1669 8 Reales with 3 dates showing and in Great shape
My first Pillar Dollar 1740 Mexico, VF

For the coins they are, all are in exceptionally good shape. You just don’t see these every day.

Looking forward to your pictures, and maybe for the effort involved we can come up with more responses than for a "here's grades" thread.

    Interesting coins.

Potosi (Bolivia) was one of the most important Spanish colonial mints and the mountain an extremely rich silver strike.

The pillar is an early issue, a bit harder to find than later rulers.

I'm curious about the 1626 1 ore klipping. Was it a full intrinsic value coin (like the copper plate money)? Why was it rectangular rather than round?

  • The value of the klippings was not pegged to some value or weight like the plate money was.

As for why they were not round, they started with a long strip of copper, and it was rolled between two rollers that each had the design on them. If you look at klips, usually one side is cut about square with the design centered. The other side is usually not lined up with the first side. This happens because the two rollers were not exactly lined up with each other.

This is also why so many of the other copper coins from Sweden during the 1600s do not line up on both sides. They would roll a strip of them, and later punch the round coins out of the strip.
