Sore Sports: Must be a RipublicaninMass Relative

``Co-division champs. That's what I'm calling it,'' Red Sox owner John Henry said. ``I can understand why there isn't (a playoff), but frankly, I would have liked to have had one. It would have been nice to settle the division championship.''

``That's got to be a first, huh?'' New York general manager Brian Cashman said. ``Two teams playing each other, clinching in the same stadium.''

The Red Sox and Yankees each finished the year 95-67, though the Fenway scoreboard listed them alphabetically, with Boston ahead of New York. But the Yankees actually took the division title because they beat the Red Sox 10-9 in the season series.

Well for 1 game, 10-9, maybe they should have added all the runs scored through all the games? They would have made as much sense. Seems like ole Steinbrenner may have had something ($) to do with this rule.

  • Why do you care, anyway? The Yanks only count pennants and WS victories, so you won't see a 2005 division flag at Yankee Stadium.

Good thing the Braves count division champships, or they would have to take down a LOT of flags!!!

    LOL
  • The whole thing is ridiculous. Baseball changes the rules, adds a wildcard, splits the divisions, jams ALL these games into October to make more money in more cities, then just doesn't have the actual time to deal with a situation like this. Two teams tied for their division league, and the tiebreaker is head-to-head record? That's about as arbitrary as comparing stadium capacities.

Anyways, have fun with the Angels. When the Sox played Oakland and Anaheim the last few years, the schedule was always real pain with the time difference. Most games started either at 4:00 EST or 10:30 EST to be fair to the home team on the west coast and give them a decent starting time. Nice of MLB to say screw you to all the West coast fans with the 5:00 rush hour start on Tuesday. God forbid the Yankees aren't on in prime time.

Well, they're not on Wednesday - the Angels will commence their beating of the Yanks at 10pm EST.

So am I. And, thank you Cleveland for not showing up this weekend - we take 2 of 3 from the Yanks, and all the juice is squeezed from the series because of the Indians collapse.
