Question: Have the Yanks technically clinched the AL East, regardless of the outcome of todays game? If the Sox win today, they'll have identical records. I thought that then the AL East title would be decided by a one game playoff? Or is the title given to the team with the best head-to-head record?

Yes you are right about the head to head record, we have been fioghting here in my house all day about this. SO Gemmy's precisou Yanks will have to deal with a "technicality" issue of "clinching" the AL East!!!! hahahahahhahahahahhahahahaha

You would think so, right? As I mentioned yesterday, the teams now have identical W-L records, but because they are both in the playoffs, the rules call for head to head records to decide who gets the division, and who gets the wild card. And, the Yanks barely won that by a 10-9 margin. So, yes - they "win" the division, with the same record as the team that "lost" it.

Of course, now they travel to Anaheim. Not much of a win, if you ask me.

  • It's the playoffs now. Regular season records don't mean squat. Tell me how many times in any sports that some team has dominated another in the regular season and then blow it to them in the post.
  • I think I got confused about what the one game playoff was for. They would have played it to determine who got to go to the playoffs assuming the loser would have been out of the wild card race, correct?

Exactly - which is why I thought it was a bit much to see the Yanks dousing themselves with champagne yesterday. Not like they won the division by 20 games - they "won" it by a default tiebreaker.

And with the Yankees getting absolutely DEMOLISHED today, I think it's clear who the superior team is.

The yankees were dousing themselves with champagne, because it's the last time they'll be celebrating...the Angels are going to have their way with them in the first round.

Throwdown, yes the Yankees won the AE East. They beat the Red Sox more games during the regular season, 10-9. If they meet in the ALCS again the Yankees will get Home Field Advantage.

Too bad the yankees will get spanked back to NY by the superior Angels.
