Yahoo! George III Half just arrived from Long Beach or Post them as you get them!

This one is my favorite purchase from the Long Beach Heritage Auction. I don't normally go for the old coppers, mainly because I don't have enough experience. This coin fits nicely into my wacky interest though. I always have a difficult time with lighting and color but these pics are very close to right on. The coin has a nice chocolate tone.

If anyone else has some new goodies to share then let's have a looksie.image

    Nice one Larry.

    No Long Beach for me but I did pick up something from the latest Dix Noonan auction.

  • Thanks gang!

    The coin really deserves a better photographer.

    Bill,

    Most Excellent! I also picked up a patern half p. that has a similar design.

    JamminJ,

    What is the story behind the first Thaler? I really like the looks on that one.: Are those cracks on the second thaler toning or the planchet? Nice!

    ThumbsUp;

    The fist thaler is from Brunswick-Wolfebutel and the design is called a Wildman. I think the design has a basis in German mythology but it's unclear how he fits in. The sister Duchy of Brunswick-Luneberg-Calenberg also has widemne but he uses his other arm to grab the tree. I like this oneas it was just a pleasing problem free circulated thaler. I saw it in a dealer's inventory last June and since it didin't move he dropped the price enough to make it a buy, although I still paid strong.

    The second thaler has some planchet flaws which are the cracks you noticed. these are fairly common on early thalers, this one being struck around 1553. I wanted a Charles V portrait thaler for my run of Holy Roman Emperors and since this one had the imperial eagle reverse it was a nice match. Another dark, crusty original coin.
