I don't usually play eBay "detective" but tell me what you think of these two auctions---&

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
They're both for the same date Jefferson---1971-S PR69DCAM, listed by the same seller and seem to show the same picture----cleverly disguising the insert number!!!!! seems to me like the bozo is playing both ends against the middle and will probably cancel one/both depending on where the bids go. What do you guys think??

Here's the first one that ends on September 26th.
Then this one ends on September 27th.

Looking at pictures from the two listings, it's clear that they're the same coin.

  • looks like he's an honest seller but uses stock photos (his own though)
  • some sellers mess up and list the same item twice

did you check closed sales and see if it was sold before?

    they don't cancel many
  • I would guess that this seller is just using a stock photo.

I have personally bought from them and had a great and wonderful transaction. Here is my feedback from them:
    Positive feedback rating Great transaction will do again anytime !! Highly recomend !! AAA++++ Seller ca-stover ( 1923Feedback score is 1000 to 4,999) Nov-18-04 18:15 3938386099

perhaps the seller is on the up-and-up but the chance of him having two examples of this coin are highly suspect. it's difficult finding one.

    Interesting choice/dilemma ....

    1) Ask the seller, who certainly KNOWS the answer, but whose word you would be reluctant to accept.
    or
    2) Ask the forum, who can't possibly know the answer, but whose combined feedback you are (more) likely to believe.
    or
    3) 1+2 aboveimage

I sent an email to the seller just for fun, and will post his reply, if forthcoming.

i asked him a question also and have no reply yet.
  • Keets, some people dont want the number showing for who knows what reason. Some say people will steal it for a registry number. I dont hide mine and have never had a complaint. But some do hide theirs. As to the premise that he cannot have two coins because they are such a tough pop, I think you may be wrong about that. Just looking at all the coins he has for sale it looks as if he is one of those who work on coin net or whatever and look thru thousands and thousands of sets looking for the registry set dcam low pop coins and gets a few. A few months ago I bid on a 56 set which had an obvious dcam obverse but the reverse photo was inconclusive. The listing stated the half was a cameo but some sellers stretch that a bit. When I won the bid, the seller emailed me and asked me if I wanted two more sets just like that one. I told him yes because the money was inline with what I should pay for a non cameo set and I thought one might have something. Just the unknown I guess. Imagine my surprise when they arrived and all three had cameo in writing on the envelope and all three were superb cameos. The half dollar. I sent them in to pcgs and lo and behold all three came back pr69 cam. All three. The pop was in the high twentys or so at the time with none higher. So I had three. I did not sell them off together though as this person has done. But heck, he may want his money quicker. Who knows?
In an insane society, a sane person will appear to be insane.
  • I have just purchased three coins all PCGS PR69 DCAM, I got them all for a good price, I hope. Anyway I hope all goes well, I want those coins. I also asked him a question regarding another coin I am currently looking for but have yet received a response.

  • He seems to use an Auto-Lister so maybe he just goofed. Especially since they were listed exactly one day apart and he has enough auctions up to possibly not have noticed the error. He may be happy that you pointed it out to him.

I received a reply from the seller, who indicated he had two different examples. Also, if I understood his message correctly - he omitted a word in a sentence - he offered to provide me with the PCGS ID numbers.

well Mark, i received an answer, also, which stated that he had two coins. so i sent another message:

Thanks for your reply to an earlier question. What I'd like to see in lieu of an insert number is a picture of the actual coin that I'm bidding on, not a stock picture which shows the same image for each listing. Can you provide individual pictures so that I know what the coin looks like that I'm actually bidding on?? Thanks again.

    Al H.

he then responded with the following message:

Upon looking at the scan the coins inside are 1970 and not 1971. PCGS made a mistake. The label says 1970 and the coin inside is 1970. I just noticed this and now I have to send the coins back to get them re slabbed. Sorry for the confusion.

to be honest, i'm now not certain if i believe the seller even has one example of either date, 1970-S or 1971-S, in a PCGS MS69DCAM holder. i received a cancelled bid notice for the first item and the following is now listed with both items-----The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the listing.

  • Well I never received a response from the seller, however, the coins arrived in record time and in the very same condition I would expect. I believe that he uses stock photos as well judging by the photos of the coins I won are clipped from the series number down. But they are nice and arrived quickly.

based on the experience of these two listings and the communication i had with the seller, i'd caution anyone bidding on his listings to use the "ask seller a question" feature.

Same picture, but first link is ended early because of error...
but in using the same picture I would like to tell a short storyimageit keeps the thread alive)

I sent 102 Wide AM Lincolns to PCGS for grading (bulk) with a minimum grade of MS66 (okay, I am new and learned quickly how rare MS66 can be, especially with carbon spotting). I was contacted by the friendly staff of Mr Hall's advising me that they won't make that grade (at least not 60% of them) and would I drop to 63 for my minimum ? I declined and had them sent back.

Since that time, I have sold about fifteen on ebay, sent 8 back in with the higher priced grading cost (7 came back MS64, and 1 MS65), then I took one pic of a "raw" one in my possession and use it as a stock photo with disclosure that coin pictured is a mere representation, but that they are guaranteed by me to be at least MS63. I never cover up PCGS numbers , though I understand the security caution if one does.

It is good to scrutinize, and this thread makes me wonder if there are any stories about me here prior to my "official" arrival image.

However, in the case of someone with lots of feedback especially when they are coins (dealers), I understand trying to get the most exposure with the least cost involved. Heck, admit it folks... it is not cheap getting our coins graded and attempting to gain the greatest profit without leaving a collector feeling a bit ripped off. On the same token, I lose lots of profit by listing with No Reserve and Never a BUY NOW price (suckers beware, I'm one of them sometimes). It might be worth $750 to someone, but us collectors and dealers ( thats right, you snipes out there reading this are one of them)... are savvy to the business overall.

With that said: Keets, he may have made an honest mistake in his listing, or he took your letter as a threat (cuz he may not be totally honest and forthright) and had to backpeddle (cancelling auction and tellin' a lil white lie). But all in all, I have enjoyed a lot of yours and others' "writings" here and am the wiser collector/dealer for it image I thank you for this thread and everyone seems to look out for each other here. It's FAMILY oriented and for the most part, Friendly.

...and one more thing, what is TTT ???

    Joe
