An NCS question

What happens if you send what you believe to be a problem coin to NCS and they don't feel it has any problems? Do they send it on to NGC? Do they slab it with a grade and list no problems? Just curious since I have never used their service.

If they feel it needs nothing they charge for evaulation and send it to NGC

If you send it for conservation then grading, they charge for evaluation but not conservation if they do nothing to the coin, then charge a $3 transfer fee to send it to NGC, and NGC will grade it and charge the appropriate grading fees.

If you send it for details grading but they find it is not a problem coin, they charge a $3 transfer fee to send it to NGC and NGC charges the appropriate grading fees.

If you send it for authentication only, they will slab it as authentic.

They only send to NGC if you say you want the coin graded. Otherwise they send it back with the small fee for evaluation.
  • What happens if NCS doesn't see a problem, sends it to NGC for grading and THEY do see a problem? Do you get charged for the evaluation, the grading fee and still get it back in a bodybag?

Good question. I should go across the street and ask these questions... But I'm tired today.

Why would they send it to NGC if you didn't request it?

If I remember what Brian Silliman told me back in '03... since they are in the same room, it would go to the NCS people and if you said holder no matter what it would end up in a NCS slab and if you said grade only it would just be a NCS charge and no grading charge from NGC. I believe he also said that when determining gradeworthiness and acceptibility that sometimes they'll pull a NGC grader or two for extra opinions so these things are probably happening already.

They screw up sometimes. It's happened to me twice. In both cases, NGC immediately credited back the fees.

From personal experience, I can verify that this is correct. I once sent them a PCGS graded coin for crackout, conservation and NGC grading. It came back in the PCGS holder because the NCS people had consulted the NGC graders who determined that the coin would not cross at the same level even after conservation.
