Classy Yankee Bashers

I'd like to nominate myself, ctsox, and stown for continually bashing the yankees and their absurd payroll, their seemingly endless array of pitchers they've trotted out to the mound, and not just one but TWO (count em TWO) big name steroid abusers - Gary 'it was the clear!' Sheffield and Jason 'I'm sorry but can't say why' Giambi.

Who did I miss?

ctsox, come on man, the Sox payroll is no saint! Guys, man, I can't believe how serious this crap is on this forum. I have almost never poked my head in Sports Talk and did tonight thinking I was having fun. Geeez, Axtell, why do you blame the Yankees for payrolls that MLB allows? Don't you think you should be after the system?

Ax, also, your assumptions that Yankee fans are fans because of championships is mostly inaccurate. We are born into this. Also, your idea of being happy as a fan has NO relevance to how NY Yankee fans view this. A team that has a history of being a mediocre team with sporadic success PLEASES its fans when the times are good. A team like the Yankees has been at or near the top in every decade since the 1920's and its fans gauge success differently. Through no fault of their own

This thread was for those yankee bashers who have done so in a gracious manner.

Nice work in attempting to derail it, you are just like spammy in that regard.

    Now, who's next?!

Yes, us yankee bashers a tight knit group.

  • Apparently my invitation to this party was lost in the mail...

Anyways, not to derail further, but responding to the stupid comment implying that the Red Sox payroll is bad or somehow comparable to the Yankees, just look at the numbers. It's staggering.

The difference in salaries between #1 spender and #2 spender is about $85 million dollars.
The difference in salaries between #2 spender and #30 spender is about $85 million dollars.

That absolutely refutes any ridiculous comments about the Red Sox being "just as bad as the Yankees" when it comes to spending.

Hey, dgbaseball - I gave you a shout! And a beer (Sam Adams?) image

On the subject of payroll, I have said time and time again that the only reason why the Sox have a payroll anywhere near where it is now is simply to keep pace with the "Evil Empire" and their seemingly endless spending. Most of it is simply reactionary spending, and as mentioned, the difference in payroll is still around $85 million dollars. $85 million dollars! Enough to field two more teams at least (Oakland's 2005 payroll was around $55 million, and Tampa Bay's around $29 million - and they didn't do too badly!)

It will never happen, but if the Yanks dropped back to trying to compete by simply developing a farm system, making savvy trades, scouting for the future etc. and not just trying to outspend everyone, I'm quite certain the Sox payroll would decrease as well. A competitive balance must remain in the AL East, so unfortunately this is what they have to do.

Baseball needs a hard salary cap. Period.

The player's union is far too strong to ever allow this to happen....and the players are too greedy to see the greater good.

I don't know - perhaps after the Senate smacks them around a bit on this steroid issue, there might be some softening on the players union, and a cap could be proposed. I would love to see that, just like football and basketball have to operate under one.

stown, China is gobbling up a great amount of resources recently, driving the prices of many products up up up. They are palying by the rules and costing us more money to live everyday. Do you see even a hint of a comparison??? If you want to compete and thrive, it costs oodles of cash. If you can't, you don't play. Major League baseball should contract to its original amount of teams, in places where they can afford to compete to be the best. The rest of these "major league" places can go back to being the minor league places that they are.

    No.

    That's not the answer.

Just because the yankees have sold their souls and every thing that can be sponsored is, and they bring in the most amount of money, that doesn't mean other teams are minor league. It's this arrogance that makes people hate yankee fans. It's this absurd 'reasoning' and 'logic' that makes people like myself want to take you and slap some common sense and make you swallow some of that pride.

The answer is to have a hard salary cap and revenue sharing JUST like the NFL. There's a reason why the NFL dominates now as America's pasttime - every team (sans a couple) have legitimate shots every year to win the super bowl.

I can see it now, Queen George Steinbrenner would have a heart attack and DIE if he had to share any of the absurd money he gets from selling every tiny bit of yankee ('sony - the official LCD tv of the yankees!' 'aquafina - the official water of the yankees!' 'blah blah blah the offical whatnot of the yankees!') with other teams.

There's a reason why people are piss poor tired of it, and no longer watch baseball - there's little to no competitive balance.

There NEVER HAS been competitive balance Axtell. The Yankees have been the Yankees since they took Babe Ruth from the Red Sox.

The answer MOST CERTAINLY is contraction. And ALOT of it. Not only is there so many TOWNS that are not major league caliber, there sre too many PLAYERS who are not major league caliber. Half of todays big league teams should go to the scrapheap as should their crappy players.
