This new service is AWESOME! Darkhorse is a great photographer and the ability to take the image when raw is unequalled for results:

I looked at the first three coins and thought I could write some snotty comment about how there was no "name in field" coin here.

    TDN:

It's no huge surprise that you own some stunning--ABSOLUTELY stunning!--coins. The pictures are, as you say, awesome. How accurate are they--that is, do you think the pictures accurately portray the coins?

  • Wow!

I was just thinking about Gobrecht dollars yesterday. I looked in the Heritage archives and found some in the $2-3K range. They were cleaned, plugged and reparied examples. image

What is the difference between the first two coins? If it is die alignment should the photo be rotated just like the die?

In most instances - absolutely 100% accurate. I do note that the 1839 is lightened slightly in the image to show the color - as was one of the darker seated proofs.

Yes, die alignment - original issues of 1836 and 1837. One is medal and one is coin alignment - which really can't be shown without the eagle upside down. But some have the eagle flying level and I'm thinking of asking them to rotate the reverse to show this fact.

Wow, they are all beautiful coins but that last one especially stands out to me as being above and beyond the rest of the group in terms of eye appeal!
  • We know about the Trade Dollars. After seeing these awesome Gobrechts and also the Seated Dollars I suggest changing your name to "Dollar Nut". image

This is going to sound like a sour grapes post, and I hate those. But...these don't look like realistic photos to me. I've never held a coin in my hand that looked like any of these photos. They look like artistic renditions of beautifull coins. Intensified color, devoid of luster and detail. Maybe it's just me.
