    Specimen (Fleur De Coin) Sets:

    1977 (9 piece) 25,000 minted $25.00
    1978 (9 piece) 24,000 minted $30.00
    1980 (10 piece) 60,000 minted $40.00

    Prices per 2004 Krause.

If these are the sets I am thinking of, beware of PVC. The packaging postively oozes with the stuff. Remove the coins and treat them with acetone, then put 'em in aftermarket holders.

  • Thank You!!
  • The prices jumped in the 2006 catalog:

    1977 (9 piece) 25,000 minted $35.00
    1978 (9 piece) 24,000 minted $45.00
    1980 (10 piece) 60,000 minted $55.00

Wow, that's a pretty significant jump in just two years. Not the sort of thing I'm used to seein' in Krause.

I think the prices realized on eBay are even higher than those new values. image

My 1964 set was in soft (PVC) plastic but without damage and I did transfer them over. All other years I have seem to be in the hard plastic (non PVC?).

1977, 1978 and 1980 sets are in packaged in mylar or something to that effect. Much like US mint sets. No PVC problems that I've noticed with them.

Market values are probably 50-75% over the 2004 Krause values.

  • I have some piedforts from the late 70's. They come in plastic similiar to that in US mint sets. Although it may not be mylar it does seem to be inert.

I guess so!! I just sold those on ebay. $50+ each for 1977 and 1978 and $100+ for the 1980. Considering what I paid for them, I'm impressed!

another point- The 1980 set has the higher mintage, but the price is higher. Why might that be?
  • Because 5 of the denominations that year were only available in the FDC set. Those being the 50 F Ag. 1c. 1/2F. 1 F. and the 5F. That being only 60K of those coins. If you have any more let me know.
