    It's a medallic thaler made at the Zellerfeldt mint in Harz. The original type was first coined in the 1620s I believe to celebrate the baptism of one of the German ruler's daughters. These issues were struck in Harz from late 1600s (I think) to mid 1700s (if not later). I've heard they were supposedly used to pay the mintworkers there, but I have no reputable source for that.

    These types of coins (baptismal-related Thalers) are a type I'd love to collect, given the funds. Unfortunately, they're way out of my reach at the moment.
