1979 Burger King question.....

I just picked up a bunch of sharp 1979 Burger King Team sets (2 Yankees, 6 Phillies) and I think a decent amount of cards will grade 9 NQ, but I'm not sure if it's worth it to grade them. Obviously any Munson, Reggie, Schmidt, Carlton, or Rose is worth grading, but what about the commons and semis? I had never really looked at these sets before and I was very surprised to find that this was Rose's first Phillies card (he was a Red for the regular 79 set).

I wouldn't grade them with the expectation of getting your money back on any of the cards other than what you mentioned. The player set collectors will buy them, other than that there isn't much of a market. You are right though, one of the big things with the BK sets is that it has the first card of players on new teams or full cards of rookies:

    77: Reggie Jackson
    78: Whitaker, Trammell
    79: Rose

I also think the 79 Guidry has a different picture than the Topps 79. If I remember correctly, the 79 BK has the 79 Topps highlight photo

    Lee:

I would buy a PSA 9 Checklist and any PSA 10 cards from the 1979 Burger King Phillies issue - especially any non-stars.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • But, if you get a 10 on any of the cards, that would cover the submission cost. Right?

You may want to check this thread before submitting and go over your cards closely.

FYI, I've always wanted to obtain a PSA 8 or 9 '79 BK Rose.

  • On this note, how tough is the 1977 Burger King Pinnella? I remember it was toughie in the'80s because it was apperently short printed. However, many such cards - '79 Bump Wills, '74 Alou - don't seem to carry much of a premium today.
