Poll: What was the biggest Screw Job in sports history?

I likely have missed a few worth of mention, so let me know and I will add them.

US vs. Russia basketball....not only were they given more time, but I recall them getting 2 chances at the play?

Anyways, I digress. The 'tuck' rule was a bad rule, but the way they called it was the correct interpretation of said rule. It's since been revoked, but it wasn't a bad call, it simply was a bad rule.
  • Of those choices, I would have to go with the US vs Russia because it was a screwing on a global scale.

I voted for the '72 basketball game too, BUT the Penn State wide side line catch against Nebraska in '82? is a close second in this Nebraskan's mind. image

You forgot Reggie Jackson running out of the baseline, throwing out his hip, and getting away with it during the World Series. It turned the whole series around for the Yankees. My Dodgers were the victim.

I hear 'ya, but it just did not create that much outrage outside the state of Nebraska. And Penn State has the NERVE to crab about the 1994 National Championship!!

One of the biggest was awarding Florida State the national football championship in 1993. ND had beat them 31-24 in the regular season and lost the next week to Boston College 41-39 on a last second field goal. ND dominated FSU and it only was close because FSU scored 2 late touchdowns. FSU edged Nebraska 18-16 in the Orange Bowl on a last minute field goal and ND beat A&M in the Cotton Bowl. Still mystifies me how you can pick a team over another one when they got beat by them late in the season.
  • How about the phantom pass interference that allowed Ohio State to beat Miami for the National Championship a couple of years ago?

Agree on both points. The 85 World Series was a close second for me, but that was an honest mistake (a bad call, albeit a very bad one), whereas the 72 Basketball Game was outright Fraud!! After the 1980 Hockey Game, I was waiting for extra seconds to magically appear on the clock to give THOSE Soviets and extra chance as well.

The tuck rule was applied correctly, but, even as a Patriot fan, I still felt they were VERY lucky!! Little did we know at the time that it was the start of a football mini-dynasty!!
