    The worst I ever saw was the Marvin Hagler - Sugar Ray Leonard fight in the late 1980's. Hagler clearly beat him...Leonard ran from Hagler the whole fight and only in the last 15 seconds or so of each round would even try to fight him...this "tactic" fooled nobody except the judges.

    I wouldn't say Hagler " clearly " beat Sugar Ray but it surely was a close bout . Don't forget Hagler handed the first 2 rounds to Leonard by not fighting southpaw. Yes Leonard tried to steal the rounds late but i wouldn't say Hagler dominated the first 2.30 of those rounds either

    I believe ESPN's Al Bernstein gave Hagler the victory by a small margin if i remember correctly

    I'll never forget Sugar Ray in one of the later rounds, with his back up against the ropes, flurrying bigtime on Hagler. Were his punches harder than Haglers ? Of course not, but that dosen't mean they shouldn't count.

    I would say the worst fumble was the fumblerooski that Nebraska pulled off in the Orange Bowl over 20 years ago....

    To me it was clear but I respect your opinion. I watched the fight live on TV - Leonard's punches didn't even faze Hagler but you're right - they still counted. No question in my mind though that the immense popularity of Sugar Ray Leonard swayed the judges.

    Of course "nobody" dominated the first 2:30 of those rounds because Leonard ran like a rabbit - if I'm a judge there...I would have deducted for that and given Hagler all those rounds to windup giving Hagler an as I stated "clear" victory. The rounds are supposed to be 3 minutes each, not 30 seconds each. If it's the same exact fight with two unknowns, the "Hagler" unknown would have gotten the decision - and it wouldn't have been close.

    we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I won't argue the fact that the decision could've gone either way but theres no way that fight was clearly won by either fighter. I will agree, however, that his popularity did help with the judges but that wont be the first or last time that has happened.

    If Sugar danced and only danced for the majority of every round don't you think you would've heard some boos rain down from the crowd ?

    I think if you go back and watch that fight again you would see that Leonard mixed in some nice combinations and did enough punching to go along with his movement to win alot of those rounds, or at least make them very close

    I too watched the fight live but we had to go see it at a local high school gymnasium on one of those huge movie type screens. That was before the days of dropping $ 50 and staying home to watch the big fight.

    CCC - Yes that's what makes boxing interesting sometimes. Even with clean "unbiased" fights, with split decisions there can often be quite a desparity between judges.

    Of course Leonard did what he had to do. If he would have gone toe- to-toe with Hagler he would have gotten knocked out quickly. Thomas Hearns found that out - LOL. Sugar Ray Leonard was probably one of the smartest boxers of all time, and was a terrific fighter, but nobody will ever convince me he was better than Marvin Hagler.

    that Hagler vs Hearns fight was one heck of a battle while it lasted. lol . Toe to toe from the opening bell

    Don't forget both Leonard and Hearns started out as welterweights where Hagler was always a true middleweight. Obviously neither had the power that hagler possesed. Hearns though did have one of the best right hands the welterweight division has ever seen

    P.S did the 80's have some excellent fighters and matchups or what. Duran,Hagler,Hearns,Sugar Ray. Do you remember the Aaron Pryor and Alexis Arguello battles ? They were some great fights

    Yes those were two excellent fights. And Hagler - Hearns was a classic. Best fight I ever saw live on TV was the George Foreman - Ron Lyle fight back in the mid-seventies. I've never seen it since or ever seen the fight listed to be shown on any TV sports history shows - if you haven't seen it...it's a must see!
