Reale or Fake??? That's the question...

This thread has eaten at me for the past few hours. Look closely at the first 1760 Reale (MY FAKE COIN) and then look at the other 1760 8 Reale. They are identical in everything. The marks and scratches, except for the artificial weathering and the die crack running across the pillars. We all know what salt water and the elements will do to a Spanish Cob, so... What are your thoughts???

Fake Reale???

Here is a certified "FAKE" 1760 8 Reale.

Now here is the coin in question.

Here's a fake I purchased and had to return...

    Sigh,, I LOVED the Toning.

The TellTale sign I DIDN'T Check: It was LIGHTWEIGHT.

    Weigh the coin.

  • Did you weigh both of them?

Edited to say JZ beat me to the punch.

What do I think about what?

    Your fake versus the other?

I think yours looks like a fake, and I'm not totally sure of the other one, but it would fool me. It has no obvious casting seam, for starters.

It looks OK to me, whereas yours looks like a fake, though not the worst or most blatant fake I've seen by any means.

    << <i>Reale or Fake??? >>

    Good pun. image

JZ- the lettering on yours is far too modern in style, and other aspects of the engraving are just ... off.

As to Julien's coin from the other thread, it too could be fake, but if so, it's more sophisticated.

Lord, first you have to look at the edges, then ya got to weigh it, then you check it against the known legit reales. Then look at the marks on mine compaired to the 2nd one. The tone concels some of them but if you look closely, you'll see them. They are both CAST copies...

Not necessarily- a cast copy is made from a mold, and a mold is made from a real coin, so there are real coins out there with the same diagnostics as your fake. But I agree that it does throw some suspicion on his piece.

Yours has an obvious casting seam- I can see it in the pictures.

His apparently does not, though it's hard to tell.

The artificial chemical toning is covering it. Look closely on each side of the the pillars. Look then at the scratch under the 4th dot from the right side of the coin proceding left. The wear on the banners (around the pillars) are identical to each other. (The owner) never followed up on my question about the weight or the scalloping.

They both come from the same mold...

If they do - then where is the die crack through H I S P A on the first coin ? There are other differences as well if you look close enough. Look at the globes for one.

If the second coin is a fake - I can't tell it based on the pic. It may or it may not be a cast copy - again I cannot tell based on the pic. The second coin appears to have signs of corrosion - that may be corrosion or it may be due to casting. I would have to see the coin in hand.
