Where is this coin from?

I got this coin awhile ago for my birthday. Never knew what country it was from. I have a picture for it, but the picture is VERY blurry and it seems either that my battery is low or the lighting is seriously wrong. I just couldn't get the picture good. To help, I will tell you what it says. On one side it has the king or monarch, on the other side it looks like two palm trees on the left and right side and some type of island.

Here's what the obverse says:
REP BLIQVE FRANCAISE
Date: 1976

Reverse:
POL NESIE FRANCAISE

I'm guessing maybe france ?

Because it says French Polynesia on the reverse, in French.

  • When you are looking at a coin from outside the US, even though the inscriptions are in the language of the country, they are often still very similar to their english translations and you can usually get an idea of what they mean if you just sound them out. In the case of your coin

REP BLIQVE FRANCAISE = REPBLIQVE (Republic) FRANCAISE (France) = Republic of France

POL NESIE FRANCAISE = POLNESIE (Polynesia) FRANCAISE (France) = French Polynesia

French Polynesia was a colony of France which is why the one side says Republic of France on it.

Now there will always be exceptions but this will work much of the time.

Nice place. I spent 6 weeks in Tahiti last fall. The hotel I was staying in (as well as other hotels) were full of French Gendarmes. A local election ended in a split between the old line French supporters and the party that wants more independence from French rule. France sent in lots of gendarmes to inforce a peace while political talks were taking place in Papette and Paris.
