GOETZ: K-227 Woodrow's Mouse Trap

K-227 Woodrow’s Mouse Trap, 1919, Cast Bronze, 58.2mm, wt.57.1g, Choice UNC.

Wilson is accused as a man who tricked Germany into the Armistice. The day before he sailed back to the U.S., Wilson had signed the Treaty of Versailles. Many of Wilson’s Fourteen Points were not incorporated into the Treaty. Parts of the Treaty were not satisfactory to Wilson either but he assented to them as the price of acceptance toward his plan for a League of Nations. The Germans claimed that by the pre-armistice Pact of November 5, 1918, they were pledged negotiation of peace within the framework of Wilson’s Fourteen Points. The Germans felt they were betrayed by the Armistice terms and the final peace treaty.

Obverse: A huge mouse trap baited with Wilson’s Fourteen Points. Inscription below “Telegram of Oct.14, 1918 – Systematic Roguery.”

Reverse: Wilson with an emperor’s wreath on his head and a contented smile on his face, sails home in a bark. The Statue of Liberty appears on the horizon. The inscription on the back seat where Wilson is sitting reads, “World Imperialism is our aim.” Inscription in the exergue, “In peace of mind he is sailing home.” Dated, June 28, 1919
