Another example of why I love DarkSide...

Got the coin below in the mail today. Romania 5 Bani. 1867. NGC PF63RD. Including $10 shipping from Greece, it cost a whopping $46. Try finding a slabbed lightside proof from that era for even 10x that price. According to Krause, these are ridiculously cheap.

Any idea what the proof mintages might be? Krause does not list any. Were there restrikes? Lack of demand? I'm trying to figure out why a mid-19th-century proof would be so cheap (Krause: $85).

DarkSide coins. Gotta love 'em!

Wow. That is one heck of a deal for a proof at that time. Very nice coin.

And I mean that in the best possible way. image

46 bucks? For a slabbed proof from the 1860's? Full Red? imageimage

    Puh-lease!

Perfect example of how the Darkside packs WAY more bang for the buck! image

Darkside value notwithstanding, you realize you stole that, right?

Oh, I'm thrilled with the price, believe me. image

I'm puzzled as to why it didn't go higher. It wasn't one of my normal BINs, but rather a 7-day auction that ran to completion. I was prepared to pay more, but hey, I ain't b*tchin'! image

Be sure not to mention the famous coin with the peac.o.c.k on it without the periods.....same goes for any of the famous Atw.at.er specimens.

That's about the going rate for these. I've sold a few in 65 and 66 holders for $20-$30 more. I think a horde of these hit the market when the Heaton mint dispersed their collection.

  • Damn, that's nice.

here is a certified 1867 1 bani that I came across, PF64 but the price isn't that nice as yours.

Uhhh... I don't see smilies, but is there some sarcasm above, or were y'all being serious? If these are "flooding the market" all of a sudden, I'd love to buy more at that price...

I didn't know about Heaton, but yes, these 1, 2, & 5 Bani coins have been on eBay quite a bit in the last few years. About 3 have sold on Teletrade (2 Bani), but many more have gone unsold because of unrealistically high reserves.

So, keep your eyes open and maybe you can assemble a nice denomination set for very little money.image

Interesting. Teletrade shows 5 proofs of the 2 Bani denomination being sold going back to 1998, but 0 of any other denominations... weird.
