Cool. I'm thinkin' you're right. It's one o' them Canadian tokens, but I have never seen the "chicken" type, either.

I thought I saw something like that in Charleton's Token book.

    Charlton #LC-54C Breton #994

    Copper 27.5mm diameter, engrailed edge.

The original of the Spread Eagle tokens are dated 1813 and were not popular as the War of 1812 was in progress and the Canadian colonies were in the midst of an American invasion. They were originally issued by a Boston merchant who had settled in Montreal during 1813.

Imitations of the 1813 token (dated 1813-1815) appeared after 1825 and were antedated.

Also, this appears to be the Large Shield variety of the 1814 token (LC-54C1).

    My Charlton lists it at: C$7/VG 15/F 25/VF 50/EF

The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Colonial Tokens.

Mine is the 3rd Edition, 1995. Not sure what the most current edition is. Cover price is C$24.95. 235 well-illustrated pages.

    Very handy reference to have.

I use a 1964 Charlton Catalogue to identify Canadian tokens. The pricing is out of date, but for ID purposes it's OK.

I have the 4th edition - 2000. Very easy to use - there is a table of legends that can help you determine the token type and send you to the correct pages of the catalogue.

Much easier than trying to determine the information for a US Hard Times token!
