At last! (this has been a long time coming)

I went to York today to visit the coinshop to pick up a coin for someone that won one of my giveaways.

I finally went and bought myself an ancient! (It's been on the cards for a while).

Septimus Severus (193-211 AD), Denarius minted c.201. Rev; Iuppiter standing left. (I thought i'd start off my Roman deity collection with the supreme god!)

And of course everytime i go to York i always walk out with an Edward I penny. (This time i've really gone and done it though, look at the strike on this one! I can't get over it)

Class 2a London, struck in 1280.

  • Can anyone tell me where the Roman one was minted?

    And what the legends mean?

Am i right in thinking the XIII and other numerals on the reverse are how these things are dated? (just in case you can't read it)

Obv; SEVERVS DIVS (or PIVS) AVG
    Rev; PMTRPXIII COSIIII I

And since this Emperor died at York it had to be bought! image

  • Actually all i now need is the mint for the Roman one.

I found a site that explains the legends. I figured COS would be consulate.

    And it is DIVS (divine)

Pretty cool. image (I'm liking these)
