Salzburg taler family portrait

I thought these 'cousins' were interesting together. The coins were 1 year type coins commemorating the dedication of the Salzburg cathedral. I imagine that these coins would have an interesting story to tell over the years.

Wow....I really need to get my camera work up to speed - these do the 1/2 taler a little more justice. The previous images were scans on an old flatbed scanner from Office Depot.

Those coins were stuck to commemorate the (then) new Salzburg Cathederal. The eight guys are bishops carrying the holy relics of St. Rupert.

WorldCoinGuy: This is my first post on the World & Ancient Coins Forum, although I've been a regular on the U.S. Coin Forum for a couple of years.

Your two Salzburg Talers are exactly the type of World Crown that I find most interesting:
      1. From a coinage time period minting process -- i.e. rolled through a press
      2. Beautiful detailed design
      3. Historical event commemoration significance
      4. Large precious metal crown - like the U.S. Silver Dollars and Gold Double Eagles that I also love to collect
I have an old collection of World Crowns that I will photograph and will submit to PCGS for certification within the next 6 months. After photographing the coins, prior to submitting them, I'd like to post the photos here on the World Coins forum for others to help me attribute.

I purchased these coins during the early to mid-1980's, and some are really beautiful. Now that I've got my U.S. Coin collection pretty well organized and catalogued, it's time for me to do the same for my World Crowns & Thalers.

Stuart - I probably speak for all on the World & Ancient Coins Forum when I say that I look forward to seeing your darkside loot. Those world crowns have been locked away for too long and they need some admiration.

Personally, I started in Indian Head cents and Lincolns many years ago, but the Russian coins and older talers have sent me in a more rewarding direction the past 5 years. I still dabble in US coins due to the lack of good foreign stuff at local shows and the desire to bring my 4 year old into the hobby, but my heart is in the older world crowns for all the same reasons.

This is off topic, but I just noticed the date for the dedication on the taler I posted was Sept 25th....interesting coincidence.

WorldCoinGuy: Thanks for your kind post.

I'll need a bit of spare time to photograph and catalog them, but will advise the World Coins Forum when I take some pictures that I can post for others to view and comment on...

I am lucky enough to have the taler, but not the 1/2 Taler. Austrian coins are very cool from the 17th and 18th century are very well designed...
