Newp--1966 Polish 100 Zlotych,Proba

Just picked this up. Apperently some rejected coin designs are minted for collectors with the word "Proba" on them. I liked the design and it's my birthyear to boot.

Nice pick-up. I have always liked these coins and have thought them undervalued.

There are actually quite a number of these 1966 Poland Millennium coins, including some patterns struck in different designs and metals like nickel (some are very rare). There are even some "Millennium" patterns dated 1960 (don't ask me why image

  • Very nice design on that one. Good catch.

Millennium would refer the the date 966, which might be considered the founding of the Polish state. This is when Count Mieszko I and his court were baptised and he unified the various lands of Poland.

I don't know why the Polish mint would have listed a 1960 coin as "millennium".

    Nice coin, Kurt!

There was an example of the rare 1960-dated "Millennium" commemorative in the year 2000 Henry Karolkiewicz auction at lot 3013. It has the same eagle side as the coin Kurt bought, but with the date 1960 instead of 1966, and on the other side says "Tysiaclecie Panstwa Polskiego," which means the "thousand-year anniversary of the state of Poland."

    Weird, but true.

Maybe it was some kind of trial piece (obviously; it was a "proba"), or more likely an error trial piece.

Thanks for the info. folks. I'm gonna look into some of these. Of course now I'm going to have to get the version that was officially released. It looks like they (polish mint) kept this reverse for the official coin and changed the obverse.
