I received my "unopened wax" earlier this week, fr. BBCE

Re: 1978 OPC Baseball wax box.

I'm happy and sad! All at the same time!

I cracked sixteen packs (that's 160 cards!)

Almost each and every un opened pack really looks great! I'm sure most would grade 8.5, 9 & 9.5 with GAI !! image

And wow! OVER 30 HOFERS & star cards OUT OF 160 CARDS! (i.e., Morgan, Carlton, Ryan, P. Niekro, Brock, Yount, McCovey, Rose, Brett, Schmidt, Jackson, Yaz, Winfield, Perez, and more!) image

And then, oh no! image Out of the 16 packs I "cracked", I would say 155 out of the 160 cards cracked, are centered L/R maybe, 10/90 to 20/80.

P.S. I'm listing the remaining 20 unopened packs for auction. With my luck, OPC printers, began a new "print run" and the remaining 150 OPC cards are all "perfect, well-centered gems"! NOT!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you are looking to send-in a nice looking pack to GAI for grading! You'll pull some HOFERS, but if would guess, all would be qualifiers! AVOID ME! LOL! my auction # 1 my auction # 2 edit: I pulled the auctions! Maybe I'll find that perfect 10??? LOL!

wow bummer , I opened a 78 partial box and although not great centering but definately a lot better than that, I did pull 2 psa 8 murray rookies out of the 28 packs that I had same goes for the 77 full box I opened and the 2 73 boxes. tons of miscuts but when the cards are centered , they are blazers!!!!!!! I opened 2 72 opc's the other night and I think 11 of the 16 were miscut
  • rbdjr,

Come on! Bust the rest! You might get that new "print run". Besides I wouldn't want to be the buyer of your auction for the remaining 20. If you state in the auction that you busted the packs you did (which you should) you are not going to get squat for them. The fact that you had so many stars out of the first 16 and the centering is sh!t without disclosing is borderline searching. But you haven't seen a Murray though! I say own up and bust 'em. The possibilities combined with the downside of selling honestly would leave me with no choice. It's your duty as a pack buster. Do it now as fast as you can and let us know. Scans are a bonus.

    You may be right! I did mention in the auction in bold red lettering that, "CENTERING FOR OPC CARDS CAN BE AN ISSUE". Damian, look at it this from a different point of view. If you break-open a case, then one box, then some packs from that box, and noticed that most of the cards were printed off-centered qualifiers. Should I open the remaining boxes? ...then all the packs? As the other boxes from that case would most likely be printed in the same manner as the box and the packs that I already opened-up! If you, me or anyone sold-off the balance of the boxes, packs, etc.;

...Should one (a seller) disclose that they opened another box from a case, or opened some packs from a box, and was not satisfied with the centering of the cards?

If a big seller like BBCE, for example, knew that a wax box from one of his wax cases (especially an OPC, which can easily be filled with OC qualifiers!) was pretty much a bust, by a buyer who "cracked a box", prevent him from selling the other 15 boxes? Or the "little guy" (like me!!!!!!!!) "cracking a box", opening less than 1/2 the packs, and selling off the rest, because he didn't like the centering of the cards from the packs he or she has opened?

Damian, after all that, yea, I pulled the auction(s) LOL! ...and I'll crack em' image

not sure if I agree on this one , this is not modern crap where you know where the super duper insert is and then try to sell the rest. with older material , pulling a star from one pack pretty much has no bearing on the next

oh yeah, bust them , 78 opc is a cheap and fun time
  • Hey rbd.

You arent too far from me. I am in Boynton Beach. We are practically neighbors. Nice to see a fellow collector in the area! I just got back from the Wellington mall. I got Pete Rose's autograph on a multi-signed HOF bat and a wire photo with him and Rod Carew from the 78 All Star game.

P.S. It was cool going to Boynton Beach (Dixie Hwy., off of Gateway!) some years back, ...going to the Strike Zone, buying-out his PSA 9 inventory, "by the box full", including the best 1955 Topps Killebrew Rookie PSA 9 known to planet earth! (i.e., Think I paid $400 for that card? Sold it @ a Superior Auction! What would that card be worth today? LOL!). I remember "passing on" buying a whole bunch of 1959 Fleer Ted Williams PSA 9s 10s. As I said to myself, "they were just overpriced junk"!

I think I made a boo boo? image

Rick moved his business to a different part of the State and so went my local slab connection! Those were the days! LOL!

    P.S. Good luck to ya!

    I erased 4 names.

I too, got hosed on a 78 OPC wax box before I realized why they were so much cheaper than 78 Topps. They were cut from a sheet with a butter knife by a drunken Canuck, plain and simple. The set is tiny compared to the Topps set from 78, but all the RB and leader cards are included. Expect lots of star cards, but non gradable.

Well! I cracked the additional 20 packs!

The results are the same as the first 16 wax packs!

So, almost all of the 360 '78 OPCs were qualifers: 10/90 to 20/80 L/R.

But I did pull about 70 HOFERS, a few Andre Dawson cards and two Eddie Murray RCs (i.e., yeah! also off-centered! both RCs should grade a PSA 9 OC and a PSA 8 OC?). So then what to do with around 70 off-centered 1978 OPC hall of famers?

I could think of a few things I would like to do with them! image

  • I received cello box from BBCEX. Packs were very hard and wrapped incredibly tight. Salvaged virtually nothing.

Meathook, was that one of the 78 Topps cello boxes Steve has on his site?
